CHAPTER XXXV
AN AFTERWORD
This shall be a brief afterword, for I have little else to say. As Madame had predicted, all antidotes and restoratives were of no avail. She had taken enough of some drug which she had evidently had in her possession for this very purpose to ensure that there should be no awakening, and although Dr. Rolleston was on the spot within half an hour, Madame de Staemer was already past human aid. There are perhaps one or two details which may be of interest. For instance, as a result of the post-mortem examination of Colonel Menendez, no trace of disease was discovered in any of the organs, but from information supplied by his solicitors, Harley succeeded in tracing the Paris specialist to whom Madame de Staemer had referred; and he confirmed her statement in every particular. The disease, to which he gave some name which I have forgotten, was untraceable, he declared, by any means thus far known to science. As we had anticipated, the bulk of Colonel Don Juan's wealth he had bequeathed to Madame de Staemer, and she in turn had provided that all of which she might die possessed should be divided between certain charities and Val Beverley.

Sax Rohmer
Profile
Novelist, born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham on 15 February 1883, the son of Irish immigrant parents who moved to London in 1886. Little is known of his early life except that he had an ambition to serve in the Civil Service in the East. On failing the entrance examination he progressed from being a clerk to more literary pursuits, including writing for the music hall. His early success with short stories led to his writing The sins of Severac Babylon His early interest in Oriental mysticism was used this enthusiasm in most of his subsequent work. Fu Manchu, his most memorable character, became very popular and appeared in fifteen books. The villain was the leader of a secret society at Limehouse, in the East End of London, and first appeared in The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu , serialized 1912-13 and published in book form a year later. Arthur Ward dabbled in further theatrical writing and adaptation but found that the niche he had created with exotic oriental thrillers was a winner and magazine serializations continued to appear until after World War II. When such publishing was on the wane, he moved to the USA, in 1947, where there were many more opportunities for radio and film work. He sold the media rights to Fu Manchu for four million dollars in 1955. Despite his success, he was never considered to be of significant literary importance. Although his writing shows imagination, the simple colourful style, the rather repetitive plots and the stylized characters led to his work being dismissed as second-rate.

ROHMER, Sax White Velvet Garden City, Doubleday Doran, 1936. A novel by the prolific British author of the classic Fu Manchu series of fantasy novels, which were immortalized in a series of films, first in the 1930s and then again in the 1960s. Inscribed by the author and signed with his trademark "$ax." Bookplate front pastedown; spine-sunned; handling to boards; very good in a very good, modestly edgeworn dust jacket with a dusty rear panel. Books signed by Rohmer are quite uncommon these days, especially in collectible condition and in dust jacket. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.

Sax Rohmer [pseudonym for Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward] (1883–1959) , prolific English author wrote the Dr. Fu Manchu series. Rohmer was born on 15 February 1883 in Ladywood, Birmingham to Irish immigrant parents William Ward and Margaret Mary, née Furey. He adopted the middle name Sarsfield after tales him mother told him of being a descendant of Irish General Patrick Sarsfield. He changed his name several times over the years, his work appearing under various pseudonyms. Early on Rohmer showed an interest in writing, with themes such as alchemy, mysticism, and magic. Some of his short stories were published in various newspapers and magazines of the day. One of them, Pearson's Weekly published his The Mysterious Mummy in 1903. He continued to write freelance for a number of years, including works for the stage where he possibly met Rose Elisabeth Knox (1886-1979) whom he married in London in 1909.
