Biography
French novelist who was more famous outside his own country than in France. He reached success before WW I with his long serial novel "Jean-Christophe." His greatest works have endured, the biographies of the heroes he worshipped, "Michelangelo," 1905, "Goethe and Beethoven," 1930, and "the Prophets of a New India," 1939. Rolland was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature 1915. He died 12/30/1944, Vezelay, France. Link to Wikipedia biography

1889 - He received his degree in history and spent two years in Rome, where his encounter with Malwida von Meysenburg, who had been a friend of Nietzsche and of Wagner and his discovery of Italian masterpieces were decisive for the development of his thought.
1895 - He returned to France, he received his doctoral degree with his thesis The origins of modern lyric theatre and his doctoral dissertation, A History of Opera in Europe before Lully and Scarlatti.
1902 - His first book was published, when he was already 36 years old.
1915 - He won the Nobel Prize for Literature "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings".
1924 - His book on Gandhi contributed to the Indian nonviolent leader's reputation.
1928 - He and Hungarian scholar, philosopher and natural living experimenter Edmund Bordeaux Szekely founded the International Biogenic Society to promote and expand on their ideas of the integration of mind, body and spirit and the virtues of a natural, simple, vegetarian lifestyle.

(1904-12). For this and for his pamphlet (1915; "Above the Battle"), a call for France and Germany to respect truth and humanity throughout their struggle in World War I, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915.     Rolland, Romain key , French novelist, biographer, playwright, and musicologist. After studying in Paris he spent two crucial years in Rome, where he was influenced by German intellectuals. He wrote biographies of Beethoven (1903, tr. 1909), Michelangelo (1905, tr. 1915), Tolstoy (1911, tr. 1911), and Mahatma Gandhi (1924, tr. 1924). His 10-volume novel Jean-Christophe roman-fleuve, or continuous series of novels, it is a fictional biography of a German-born musician and a study of contemporary French and German civilization. Rolland was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature. His genuine pacifistic philosophy and the courage of his convictions, reflected in Above the Battle (1915, tr. 1916), led to self-imposed exile in Switzerland, where he remained until 1938.
