After a spate of successful solo shows, including his spectacular exhibition at the South London Gallery and the award of the Baloise Price 2001, Sinclair is returning to London with new work. In celebration and critique Sinclair comments on his indebtedness to performance art by exposing the tattoo REAL LIFE emblazoned on his bare back. By not revealing his face as identifier but instead turning his vulnerable back to the audience Ross Sinclair has introduced a current variation of self-portraiture. He denies himself to the audience whilst offering his trust in a gesture. Continuous photographic and video documentation of this gesture from 1994 to this day in changing contexts attest to the validation of this work as the longest symbolic performance appropriated to contemporary art production. Ross Sinclair has reworked the principles of installation, self-portraiture and the neon-slogan mindful and at the same time irrespective of their postmodern definitions. In doing so he has created a unique style of installation which can be integrated and fused with the conventional art genres without loosing its critical power.

Ross Sinclair Real Life vs. Nature at greenwards, Aberdeenshire, September/October 1997 Real Life vs. Nature involved the construction of indoor and outdoor wooden structures. Indoors the structure is too small to get into and is in a confined space meanwhile the outdoor structure is high on tall legs and can be climbed into to get a great view of the surrounding countryside. I'm in a farmhouse in Aberdeenshire. Greenwards By Hatton, Peterhead, to be specific. Lured here - it's a two-hour drive from my parents, place - by a paragraph and a photo in The List. 'What's On in Glasgow and Edinburgh', indeed. But the room I',m standing in is a white cube all right, and the single piece of work installed is of the sort that I'd only associate with an urban contemporary art space. A wooden shed that's too small to enter, raised on legs, with four pencil-shaped wooden posts penetrating and protruding from its sides; a cassette player held aloft - by rope tied to the pencil posts - playing traditional Scottish music backwards; the words 'I', and 'MESSIAH AM JAlLER', marked on adjacent gallery walls. On the room's window ledge is documentation relating to the gallery. A copy of Flash Art reviews an earlier show here at Iain Irving Projects. The review is written by Judith Findlay, Iain's partner in this remote rural spot, but there is no mention of these facts in the review. 'By all accounts there are some interesting things happening in...err... Greenwards By Hatton,' says a reader in Milan or Paris or Berlin. Diaries are extracted, windows found and an intention pencilled in. In one sense the review is a joke that only a few art insiders will appreciate. Quite funny, though.

You could buy T-shirts, mugs, key rings, and pens, all bearing the legend "I Real Life." For Sinclair, "real life" is not something that exists but something dreamed of or longed for, something that exerts itself as an idealized possibility out of the more immediate situation of cultural uncertainty. This was confirmed by The Hamnavoe Free State [Library], 1999, which featured a low table heaped with books covering relevant subjects, among them student activism, urban guerrilla movements, and Orkney mythology. There was also a copy of Guy Debord's 1967 Society of the Spectacle, while on the wall above, two posters covered in another camouflage pattern bore the words "REAL LIFE" and "SPECTACULAR LIFE." By now the two were becoming hard to distinguish. Another work comprised a neon sign and four photos, including one of the huge yellow ramp Sinclair built on the quayside in Stromness for his show there. We saw it here alongside other images of Hamnavoe and the nearby island of Hoy, all framed under glass so that the London show was reflected back into the earlier exhibition. Originally attached to the ramp, on the floor nearby was the neon sign "GRACE," made by the artist at the time of his eponymous daughter's birth. Some things are real.

For Sinclair, "real life" is not something that exists but something dreamed of or longed for, something that exerts itself as an idealized i·de·al·ize v. i·de·al·ized i·de·al·iz·ing i·de·al·iz·es v. tr. To regard as ideal. To make or envision as ideal. v. intr. possibility out of the more immediate situation of cultural uncertainty. At the gallery hung seven photographs of Sinclair lying face down like a corpse in a variety of otherwise idyllic natural settings: on a woodland path, in a river, at the water's edge. In each image he is dressed in tartan shorts. Sinclair is Scottish, but what that term means, either to us or to him, is always up for discussion. The words "REAL LIFE," tattooed across his bare upper back, are clearly visible, especially as each scene is lit so starkly that the heightened colors make nature itself seem almost artificial. Turned away from his audience in what has now become a familiar pose, Sinclair makes a show of his sincerity to the world. We, in turn, accept the gesture as a legitimate gambit, a stance adopted in the artist's search for an answer to the puzzle of identity and cultural location. In that he and we are facing in the same direction, there is a possibility that something might be shared, but the consequent inability to acknowledge us is a mark of introspection
