Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the son of Gabriele Rossetti, an Italian political exile who came to England in 1824, and the elder brother of the poet Christina Rossetti . He was born in London and educated at King's College School. After studying painting at Cary's Art Academy and the Royal Academy, he became acquainted with Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais who went on to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a movement characterised by romanticism, symbolism, and dramatic use of colour. Although better known as a painter, Rossetti wrote poetry from an early age, his best known poem, The Blessed Damozel , appearing in 1850 in The Gem , the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's magazine. In 1860 he married the beautiful Eleanor Siddal, the model for the drowned Ophelia in Millais' painting. Devastated by her death in 1862 from a laudanum overdose, he buried a manuscript containing many poems with her, which he later exhumed and published in 1870. His first volume of poetry, Early Italian Poems , had been published earlier in 1861 and contained translations of Dante and some 60 other poets. In 1881 he published

T HE Rossetti Archive facilitates the scholarly study of Dante Gabriel Rossetti Completed in 2008 to the plan laid out in 1993, the Archive provides students and scholars with access to all of DGR's pictorial and textual works and to a large contextual corpus of materials, most drawn from the period when DGR's work first appeared and established its reputation (approximately 1848-1920), but some stretching back to the 14th-century sources of his Italian translations. All documents are encoded for structured search and analysis. The Rossetti Archive aims to include high-quality digital images of every surviving documentary state of DGR's works: all the manuscripts, proofs, and original editions, as well as the drawings, paintings, and designs of various kinds, including his collaborative photographic and craft works. These primary materials are transacted with a substantial body of editorial commentary, notes, and glosses. Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
The poet, painter, and designer Dante Gabriel Rossetti , b. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, May 12, 1828, d. Apr. 9, 1882, was a cofounder of the PRE-RAPHAELITES, a group of English painters and poets who hoped to bring to their art the richness and purity of the medieval period.
The son of the exiled Italian patriot and scholar Gabriele Rossetti and a brother of the poet Christina Rossetti, Dante showed literary talent early, winning acclaim for his poem The Blessed Damozel (1847) before he was 20 years old. As a student at the Royal Academy Antique School (1845-47), he met William Holman Hunt and John Millais, with whom he launched the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.
Rossetti's first Pre-Raphaelite paintings in oils, based on religious themes and with elements of mystical symbolism, were The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Ecce Ancilla Domini (1850), both in the Tate Gallery, London. Although he won support from John Ruskin, criticism of his paintings caused him to withdraw from public exhibitions and turn to watercolors, which could be sold privately. Subjects taken from Dante Alighieri's Vita Nuova (which Rossetti had translated into English) and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur inspired his art in the 1850s. His visions of Arthurian romance and medieval design also inspired his new friends of this time, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones Romantic love was Rossetti's main theme in both poetry and painting. Elizabeth Siddal, whom he married in 1860, was the subject of many fine drawings, and his memory of her after she died (1862) is implicit in the

He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais , and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones . His work influenced the European Symbolists , and he was also a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats . His later poetry was characterised by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling, especially in his sonnet sequence The House of Life . Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work; he frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures, from

How long ago I may not know: But just when at that swallow's soar Your neck turned so, Has this been thus before? And shall not thus time's eddying flight Still with our lives our love restore In death's despite, And day and night yield one delight once more? Sudden Light was written in 1853 or 1854 (according to Rees), and first published in 1863 in Poems: An Offering to Lancashire . It appeared with two distinctly different final stanzas, both of which can be found in the Doughty's edition (referenced below). The above version is the later one, as it appeared in the 1881

At thirteen he left school to enter Sasss, the preparatory academy for the Royal Academy Schools ... but soon he was cutting classes and chafing at the tedious assignments, pronouncing them trivial and mechanical, death to the soul of an artist...While William was shuttling back and forth to his office in Old Broad Street, Gabriel was drifting around the city, exploring and writing poetry when he should have been carefully crosshatching. This kind of behavior earned him a reputation as the family maverick, the scapegrace who worried and aggravated his parents.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti
16 October 2003 - 18 January 2004 Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was one of the most unusual and original of all Victorian artists. He was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In his middle years he created vivid watercolours and intricate drawings on themes of love and morality. He is perhaps best known for his images of powerful and mysterious women. These dreamlike and erotic paintings have a magic that still speaks to us today. Rossetti created a new kind of art. He used colour, design and symbolism to suggest a mood and to convey the ideas that were important to him - female virtue, beauty, sensuality, love, death and destiny. This was the first major show of Rossetti's works since 1973. It included over 150 items, featuring many of his most famous pieces. Here you can see a selection of these works and find out more about one of British art's most fascinating figures.

Description
A major poet, writer, and painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was seen as the dominating cultural presence in the second half of the nineteenth century. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite movement, revised and reimagined Blake’s project of marrying images and texts, and was a shaping influence on Modernist aesthetic ideas and practices. His translations are original poetical works in their own right. Jerome McGann, a leading figure in nineteenth- and twentieth-century scholarship, presents a generous selection of Rossetti’s poetry, prose, and original translations. The collection, which includes important writings unavailable in any edition of Rossetti ever printed, is accompanied by McGann’s learned and critically incisive commentaries and notes.
