  • ASIN: Customer Reviews: Beautiful. A precurser to Surrealism, this gem of French literature is not to be overlooked despite it's "out of print" status. The imagery in this book is nothing short of amazing and the oddly structured "plot" easily holds your attention throughout the book. In fact, the imagery alone is worth the price you may have to pay tracking this book down. When I started reading the book my attention was immediatly drawn into the bizzare descriptions of absurd machines and circus-like performances that made little sense at the time. It was hard to stop laughing at some of the off the wall images my mind conjured while reading and when the pangs of laughter finally alleviated I couldn't put the book down. The second half is full of explainations about what you just read and introduces the characters and setting from the first part of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Surrealism or experimental literature. It really doesn't get much better.

Roussel was the third and last child in his family, with a brother Georges and sister Germaine. In 1893, at age 15, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire for piano . A year later, he inherited a substantial fortune from his deceased father and began to write poetry to accompany his musical compositions. At age 17, he wrote Mon Âme , a long poem published three years later in Le Gaulois . By 1896, he had commenced editing his long poem La Doublure when he suffered a mental crisis. After the poem was published on June 10, 1897 and was completely unsuccessful, Roussel began to see the psychiatrist Pierre Janet . In subsequent years, his inherited fortune allowed him to publish his own works and mount luxurious productions of his plays. He wrote and published some of his most important work between 1900 and 1914, and then from 1920 to 1921 traveled around the world. He continued to write for the next decade, but when his fortune finally gave out, he made his way to a hotel in

    4. Books From Avenue B: "Among The Blacks", By Raymond Roussel & Ron Padgett
    Brief description and reviewers comments.
    http://www.ratical.org/AvenueB/AmongTheBlacks.html
Among the Blacks 64 pages ISBN 0-939691-02-7 Cover by Trevor Winkfield Among the Blacks consists of two works: Padgett's translation of Roussel's early story "Parmi les noirs," first published in 1935 in his book , together with Padgett's memoir focusing upon his own experience among black people. Roussel's story, about a master mariner named White who encounters an African chief named Booltable, is built upon the kind of whimsical and extravagant word play (its first and last sentences are identical except for one letter in one word"pooltable"/ "Booltable") for which Roussel was idolized by the French Surrealists. In contrast, as he writes in his Afterword, Padgett's memoir "grew out of the nagging need to come to grips with the frustrations of being a white American who had grown up in a racist environment and who, despite his rejections of racism at an early age, had rarely felt unselfconscious in the company of a black person." Its language is transparent and unmannered, "an attempt simply to tell the truth, and to do so with a minumum of artfulness."
"Raymond Roussel, or genius in the pure state . . ."

Home Library French Literature Companion Roussel, Raymond (1877-1933). An aura of the unreal and the artificial surrounds the reputation of this most curious of modernists, a French writer who from the outset cherished a self-image of incomparable genius when, at 19, he composed the verse novel La Doublure (1897) in a state of rapture. (The psychiatrist Pierre Janet, whom Roussel later consulted, was to write up his notes as the casehistory of an ecstatic narcissist.) Roussel's world cruise of 1920-1; his meanderings across Europe in a luxury caravan, complete with bathroom and studio; his passion for chess, for expensive clothes, for pistols and barbiturates; his unexplained death in the Palermo hotel where Wagner had written Parsifal —such biographical details support the myth of the artist as dandy , an exquisite solipsist all but refined out of existence. Apart from the rare performances of such plays as L'Étoile au front (1924) and La Poussière de soleils (1926), which the Paris

Edit Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome Associated With HIV and Leprosy Citations: 8 Sylvie Abel Helene Voinchet Morgane Roussel ... Dominique Sainte-Marie Background:Immunereconstitutioninflammatorysyn- drome (IRIS) is an unusual inflammatory reaction to an opportunistic infection that occurs in human immuno- deficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with profound immunosuppressionduringthereconstitutionoftheim- mune system in the initial months of highly active anti- retroviral treatment. Observations: We describe 3 cases of leprosy occur- ring in patients treated with a combination of 3 antiret- roviral drugs who fulfilled the criteria for IRIS. A reac- tional state occurred in all 3 cases. Two of the 3 patients presented an unusual ulcerous progression of the le- sionsnotgenerallyobservedincasesofleprosy.Theout- come was favorable in all 3 cases. The frequency of IRIS associated with leprosy in French Guiana and Marti- nique is estimated at 3 cases per 1000 HIV-positive pa- tients receiving highly active antiretroviral treatment. Conclusion: Leprosy should be recognized as an IRIS- associated infection with possibility of atypical presen- tation.
