Love is the ark appointed for the righteous,
Which annuls the danger and provides a way of escape. Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment. Cleverness is mere opinion, bewilderment is intuition. I died as a mineral and became a plant, I died as plant and rose to animal, I died as animal and I was Man. Why should I fear? When was I less by dying? Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been put in every heart. Come even though you have broken your vows a thousand times, Come, and come yet again. Ours is not a caravan of despair.

Rumi Love Poems
Rumi himself used to consider poetry as a 'secondary product'. As to say, "a mere reflex of that huge interior reality we call love". "Love is an emotion", he always used to repeat, "totally silent and inexpressible with words".

About Rumi and Divine Love
I have yet to find a better short description about the essence of Rumi than by the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan "The original words of Rumi are so deep, so perfect, so touching, that when one man repeats them hundreds and thousands of people are moved to tears. They cannot help penetrating the heart. This shows how much Rumi himself was moved to have been able to pour out such living words.
Many wanted to consider him a prophet, but he said, 'No, I am not a prophet, I am a poet.' When Hafiz wrote about Rumi he said, 'I am not capable of writing about the verses of Rumi. What I can say is that he is not a prophet, but he is the one who brought the Sacred Book.' In other words he wanted to say that in fact he was a prophet."

T he minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere,
they're in each other all along.
From Essential Rumi
by Coleman Barks

L ove is from the infinite, and will remain until eternity.
The seeker of love escapes the chains of birth and death.
Tomorrow, when resurrection comes, The heart that is not in love will fail the test. From Thief of Sleep by Shahram Shiva W hen I am with you, we stay up all night, When you're not here, I can't get to sleep. Praise God for these two insomnias! And the difference between them. From Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks S uddenly the drunken sweetheart appeared out of my door. She drank a cup of ruby wine and sat by my side. Seeing and holding the lockets of her hair My face became all eyes, and my eyes all hands. From Thief of Sleep by Shahram Shiva I have phrases and whole pages memorized, but nothing can be told of love. You must wait until you and I are living together.

Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous, come!
Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times,
Ours is the portal of hope, come as you are."

Mevlana Rumi Who is Mevlana?
Mevlana who is also known as Rumi, was a philosopher and mystic of Islam, but not a Muslim of the orthodox type. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him and to his disciples all religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian alike, his peaceful and tolerant teaching has appealed to men of all sects and creeds.
Mevlana was born on 30 September 1207 in Balkh in present day Afghanistan He died on 17 December 1273 in Konya inpresent day in Turkey . He was laid to rest beside his father and over his remains a splendid shrine was erected. The 13th century Mevlana Museloum with its mosque, dance hall, dervish living quarters, school and tombs of some leaders of the Mevlevi Order continues to this day to draw pilgrims from all parts of the Muslim and non-Muslim world.
Whirling Dervishes
The "dance" of the Whirling Dervishes is called Sema. Sema is a part of the inspiration of Mevlana as well as part of the Turkish custom, history, beliefs and culture.

The disappearance of his companion turned R u m i to poetry, and his D i v a n-e Shams ("Collected Poetry of the Sun") contains verses on his love and longing for Shams al-D i n. His main work, the didactic epic Ma s nav i -ye Ma'nav i ("Spiritual Couplets"), widely influenced Muslim mystical thought and literature. He is believed to have composed poetry while in a state of ecstasy and often accompanied his verses by a whirling dance. After his death, his disciples were organized as the Mawlawiyyah (Mevlev i ), a Sufi order called in the West the "whirling dervishes," and his influence on Turkish culture is inestimable. His poems, originally in Persian, have been translated into a number of languages, including English, and have enjoyed a worldwide following into the modern period. This weekend I played hostess to a five day long organic café tour and slumber party at my place in Silverlake with my beloved Bryanboy Refinery 29 . I ended up putting together a boggled failure of a costume that can only be described as broken fairy/confused raver/crushed insect circa 1990-something/drunk Tinkerbell. We went through the proper procedure of going to a few parties and freezing in between them with Colin, who came up for the night, but the highlight was definitely 7-11-ing at the end of the night all bundled up. And watching Bryan try to get away with a crotchety old woman act with multiple cab drivers. And discussing tapeworms at length in a car full of people that probably didn't want to discuss tapeworms. And remembering that Silly String and Blow Pops exist. And hailing that last cab so triumphantly that it pretty much happened in slow motion. Halloween never goes the way you think it will. Alexander Wang hooded romper
Weird amount of things that I love going on with this little suit for being so simple - one piece, passable as pyjamas, hooded, smushy knit..and the easiest thing to throw on in three seconds when running out the door. Though the chances of having to do that might be slim since it's also become my default for lazing around the house. Possible step backward.
I have a million boring things to do tomorrow before driving up to LA for the weekend to welcome Bryan for his first visit to California. Halloween ideas are non-existent..and I was so sure that inspiration would have struck by now. Slowly starting to scramble.

Rumi's Rubaiyat
Translated by Zara Houshmand Beginning in April 2000, I made a commitment to translate one of Rumi's quatrains each day for iranian.com. Jahanshah Javid chose the poems; it was part of my commitment that I would accept the choice, no matter how difficult, and do my best to create an equivalent poem in English. I hoped in the process to improve my Persian and get closer to Rumi's heart; it's also probably the wisest thing I've ever done to grow as a poet myself. I'm grateful to Jahanshah for making this possible, and also to the many readers who have offered encouragement and corrections. If you would like to be informed when the translations are published as a book, please send me an email:

Rumi wrote over 65,000 verses of intoxicated poetry on the Sufi path of love and spiritual understanding. His ecstatic and wondrous spiritual writings left a lasting impression on Sufism , the mystical practice of Islam . His songs expressed the pain of being separated from the Beloved (Allah/God) and the joy of union with Him. Rumi's importance is considered to transcend national and ethnic borders. His poems have been translated into many of the world's languages and have appeared in various formats. The Persian world, from Turkey to India, looks upon Rumi as one of the greatest spiritual poets in history. He has had a significant influence on both Persian and Turkish literature throughout the centuries. Over the last century, Rumi’s poetry has spread from the Islamic world and into the Western world. The lyrical beauty of his outpourings of love for the Divine have also helped to make him one of the most popular and best-selling poets in America. In addition to his legacy as a poet, Rumi founded the Mevlevi Order, better known as the "Whirling Dervishes," who believe in performing their worship in the form of dance.
