Vor genau 20 Jahren verhängte der iranische Revolutionsführer Chomeini die Fatwa über Salman Rushdie. Von seiner aufgeklärten Weltanschauung ist der Autor der "Satanischen Verse" nicht abgerückt. Foto: dpa Begleitet von der Häme ehemaliger Weggefährten und mit dem Schutz des alten Gegners, verkörpert durch den britischen Geheimdienst, ging also Rushdie für zehn Jahre in den Untergrund. Er schlief in Wohnungen ohne Fenster und wechselte mehrmals in der Woche das Domizil. Oft wachte er auf und wusste nicht einmal, in welcher Stadt er sich befand. Mittlerweile lebt Rushdie in New York. Ganz ohne Personenschutz kommt er zwar nicht aus, aber die Drohungen, die regelmäßig zum Jahrestag der Fatwa bei ihm eingehen, seien nicht mehr als "eine Art islamistischer Valentinsgruß", so Rushdie. Damals aber, vor zwanzig Jahren, löste Rushdies vierter Roman eine globale Krise aus und demonstrierte so auf dramatische Art und Weise die Macht der Literatur. Bei gewaltsamen Protesten kam es zu hunderten von Toten, auf mehrere Buchhandlungen, die den Roman im Sortiment führten, wurden Bombenanschläge verübt. Der japanische und türkische Übersetzer des Buchs wurden im Zuge der Fatwa ermordet. Dass es sich bei den "Satanischen Versen" um einen der großen Romane des 20. Jahrhunderts handelt, wurde von den tragischen Ereignissen überschattet. Rushdies vierter Roman war bereits mit dem Whitbread Award für die Best Novel of the Year ausgezeichnet worden - jede weitere literarische Würdigung hätte für alle beteiligten Personen jedoch die Bedrohung von Leib und Leben bedeutet. Nicht zuletzt aus diesem Grund geriet die literarische Bedeutung dieses komplexen Kunstwerks zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit.

Salman Rushdie is an essayist and author of fiction born in Bombay in 1947 to a middle-class Moslem family that later relocated to Pakistan; he attended school in English at age 14 and later graduated from Kings College at Cambridge University. His narrative style is often associated with magical realism, a literary technique that does not follow ordinary physical rules or normal patterns of cause and effect. An author of numerous short stories, Rushdie has received critical acclaim for (1981) and Shame (1983); in 1989, publication of The Satanic Verses prompted the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran to issue a fatwa fatwa remains in force; the bounty on Rushdie has increased to nearly $2M, and Rushdie remains in hiding under private security while he continues to write and publish.
