A Statue of Ryokan Ryōkan (良寛) (1758-1831) was a Zen Buddhist monk of the Edo period (Tokugawa shogunate 1603-1864), who lived in Niigata, Japan. He was renowned as a poet and calligrapher . He soon left the monastery, where the practice of Buddhism was frequently lax, and lived as a hermit until he was very old and had to move into the house of one of his supporters. His poetry is often very simple and inspired by nature. He was a lover of children, and sometimes forgot to go on his alms rounds to get food because he was playing with the children of the nearby village. Ryōkan was extremely humble and refused to accept any official position as a priest or even as a "poet." In the tradition of Zen, his quotes and poems show that he had a good sense of humor and didn't take himself too seriously. His poetry gives illuminating insights into the practice of Zen. He is one of the most popular Zen Buddhists today.
Ryōkan's Hut Ryokan's Grave Ryōkan (良寛) was born at Izumozaki in Echigo Province, on the coast of the Sea of Japan, in 1758. His father, Yamamoto Inan, was an owner of a famous shipping agency, a village headman, a

66. Zen Poetics Of RYokan - Articles - House Of Hermits - Hermitary
The poetry of Japanese hermit and poet ryokan is based on his Zen insight.

Zen Poetics of Ryokan
The following article (by Meng-hu) is reprinted from Simply Haiku : A Quarterly Journal of Japanese Short Form Poetry , Summer 2006, vol. 4., no. 2 ( . Reprinted with permission.
I f the only measure of poetry were technique, then the haiku and waka of Ryokan (1758-1831) would not be models. But Ryokan scorned technique. His favorite predecessor was not a formal Japanese scholar-poet but Han-Shan, the Chinese hermit who inscribed his poems on rocks, walls and miscellaneous scraps, and boasted that his technical flaws ("wasp's waist" and "crane's knees") proved that he was neither a poet nor learned. Han-shan summed up ignorant reaction to his work: When stupid people read my poems,
They don't understand and sneer.
When average people read my poems,
They reflect and say they are deep.
When gifted people read my poems,
They react with full-face grins. Ryokan, too, disputed the academic version of what was proper poetry, lampooning the monk-poets of his day: With gaudy words their lines are formed
And further adorned by novel and curious phrases.

Ryokan the Japanese style Inn typical Ryokan in a small town tatami, reed mat, room Everything You Need to Know about Staying at a Ryokan Note that the following describes a night at a mid-range or higher ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Many ryokan in Japan that specialize in foreign guests may be much less formal and may not serve dinner or even breakfast.
On arrival at a ryokan, you leave your shoes at the entrance, don a pair of slippers, and are shown by a maid to your room, which has a tatami (reed mat) floor. Slippers are taken off before entering tatami rooms. Instead of using numbers, rooms are named after auspicious flowers, plants or trees. The interior of the room will contain a tokonoma (alcove), probably decorated with a flower display or a calligraphy scroll. Do not step into or place any objects in the tokonoma. One side of the room will contain a cupboard with sliding doors for the bedding; the other side will have sliding screens covered with rice paper and, may perhaps, open onto a veranda with a garden view. tea service with the sweet The room maid then serves tea, with a Japanese sweet, on a low table surrounded by zabuton (cushions) in the centre of the room.
