Sandburg, Carl
Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) was an internationally-acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose eclectic career spanned a stint as a hobo, soldier, political activist, poet, writer of children¢s fantasy, journalist, and a novelist. Throughout it all, he was a champion of the everyday working class. Born to Swedish immigrants in Galesburg, Illinois, Sandburg began working as a small child; quitting eighth grade to deliver milk, harvest ice, lay bricks, thresh wheat, shine shoes, and travel as a hobo. In 1898 he volunteered for service in the Spanish-American War, and served a peaceful year in Puerto Rico. He returned home and entered Lombard College. At Lombard Sandburg joined the Poor Writers¢ Club, and his creativity was encouraged by the founder of the club, Professor Phillip Green Wright. After graduation, Sandburg worked in the vicinity of Lombard as a salesman and wrote poetry on the side. Wright printed a number of books of verse for his pupil, including Reckless Ecstacy Incidentals (1907), and

Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on January 6, 1878. His parents, August and Clara Johnson, had emigrated to America from the north of Sweden. After encountering several August Johnsons in his job for the railroad, the Sandburg's father renamed the family. The Sandburgs were very poor; Carl left school at the age of thirteen to work odd jobs, from laying bricks to dishwashing, to help support his family. At seventeen, he traveled west to Kansas as a hobo. He then served eight months in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American war. While serving, Sandburg met a student at Lombard College, the small school located in Sandburg's hometown. The young man convinced Sandburg to enroll in Lombard after his return from the war. Sandburg worked his way through school, where he attracted the attention of Professor Philip Green Wright, who not only encouraged Sandburg's writing, but paid for the publication of his first volume of poetry, a pamphlet called

Read A Chapter From Carl Sandburg's
" ROOTABAGA STORIES " Carl Sandburg was virtually unknown to the literary world when, in 1914, a group of his poems appeared in the nationally circulated Poetry magazine. Two years later his book Chicago Poems was published, and the thirty-eight-year-old author found himself on the brink of a career that would bring him international acclaim.
Carl Sandburg worked from the time he was a young boy. He quit school following his graduation from eighth grade in 1891 and spent a decade working a variety of jobs. He delivered milk, harvested ice, laid bricks, threshed wheat in Kansas, and shined shoes in Galesburg's Union Hotel before traveling as a hobo in 1897.
Sandburg's experiences working and traveling greatly influenced his writing and political views. He saw first-hand the sharp contrast between rich and poor, a dichotomy that instilled in him a distrust of capitalism.

Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) American poet, historian, novelist and folklorist, 'the singing bard'. In his work Sandburg gave voice to the people of the Midwestern. He was a central figure in the 'Chicago Renaissance' and he played a significant role in the development in poetry that took place during the first two decades of the 20th century. His emphasis on the tradition of American experience associate him with Hart Crane and Robinson Jeffers. these people of the air,
these children of the wind,
had a sense of where to go and how,
how to go north north-by-west north,
till they came to one wooden pole,
till they were home again.

(from The People, Yes Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of poor Swedish immigrant parents. His father was August Sandburg, a blacksmith and railroad worker, who had changed his name from Johnson. His mother was the former Clara Anderson. Sandburg was educated at public school until he was thirteen, and he then worked in odd jobs in Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. In 1898 he returned to his home town for a short time with the trade of house-painter. One of Sandburg's favorite stories was that he was rejected by West Point because he failed the test in arithmetic and grammar. When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, Sandurg enlisted in the 6th Infantry, but saw no combat. Upon his return he entered Lombard college in Galesburg, studying the Classics. During these years he worked as a janitor and as a 'call man' on the Galesburg fire department. Encouraged by professor Philip Green Wright, Sandburg started to write poetry. His first book, IN RECKLESS ECSTASY, was printed privately in 1904.

Where to? What Next? And the importance of asking that question
A significant question that gets asked in our film is when Studs Terkel echos Carl Sandburg's famous line from The People, Yes, "Where to? What Next?". Studs asks; "What other question can we ask today?" And in asking this he reminds the viewer of how eternal that question is, for us a individuals and for the United States as a nation.
Sandburg's original question and Studs' modern reference to it is really what this film is about. A window into the work and current relevance of Sandburg. Studs Terkel died on this day, October 31st, 2008, but his vast body of work and his contribution to our film will be enjoyed for many years into the future. He opened his doors and his mind to our project, and for that I am extremely grateful.
As we move towards finishing the film this month, entering it in countless film festivals and negotiating distribution possibilities this blog will change. Very frequently I am going to be celebrating some of the important people and moment that appear in the film. Please become a 'follower' of this blog and join the journey as we being to share the film with the world.
