Cool Tombs When Abraham Lincoln was shoveled into the tombs he forgot the copperheads and the assassin . . . in the dust, in the cool tombs. And Ulysses Grant lost all thought of con men and Wall Street, cash and collateral turned ashes . . . in the dust, in the cool tombs. Pocahontas' body, lovely as a poplar, sweet as a red haw in November or a pawpaw in May, did she wonder? does she remember? . . . in the dust, in the cool tombs? Take any streetful of people buying clothes and groceries, cheering a hero or throwing confetti and blowing tin horns . . . tell me if the lovers are losers . . . tell me if any get more than the lovers . . . in the dust . . . in the cool tombs.

    Notes on Life and Works
Carl Sandburg's parents were Swedish immigrants who settled in Galesburg, Illinois, where he was born. After a time of manual labour, Sandburg spent four years (without obtaining a degree) at its Lombard College and went on to a career in journalism in Chicago as associate editor of System and editorial writer for the Daily News . He published eight volumes of poemshis Chicago poems quickly made him a popular bard in the tradition of Walt Whitmanand many children's stories, but his major achievement is the classic six-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln (1926, 1939). He was made a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for this work and won the Pulitzer Prize for the biography in 1940. He married Lillian Steichen, sister of photographer Edward Steichen, and settled down in Harbert, Michigan. Their love letters are edited by Margaret Sandburg (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1987; PS 3537 A618 Z875 Robarts Library); and Herbert Mitgang made a more general selection in 1968 (PS 3537 A618Z53 Robarts Library). The standard edition of his collected poems came out in 1970 from Harcourt, Brace (PS 3537 A618 1970 Robarts Library). Penelope Niven has written his biography (New York: Scribner's, 1991; PS 3537 A618 Z785 Robarts Library).

    Biography
American writer, poet and biographer well-known for his famous biography, "Abraham Lincoln: The War Years" in 1939. The following year, Sandburg was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in History for the biography, and the year after that, a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry. He was one of the most visible poets in the U.S., appearing on radio and television. Grounded in a concern for social justice, Sandburg is considered to be an authentic American poet in the same tradition as Walt Whitman. Sandburg was the son of Swedish immigrants. His father, August, worked as a blacksmith helper for Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Even though his hard-working dad toiled and sweated to provide shelter and food for the family, economic hardships were always present. The boy learned to carry a hatred for the injustices embedded in the capitalist economic system felt by laborers like his father. Hard times meant that Sandburg had to leave school in order to find employment. He tried to learn a trade in hometown of Galesburg, IL, but he lacked the ability and skills. He traveled around the country doing various jobs. He became a soldier during the Spanish American War in 1898. He was a fireman, hobo, and lecturer on the lyceum circuit. He helped to organize the Wisconsin Democratic Party. He went to Lomlard College in Galesburg on a government-supported grant.

Carl August Sandburg (January 6, 1878 – July 22, 1967) was an American poet, historian, novelist, balladeer and folklorist. H. L. Mencken called Carl Sandburg "indubitably an American in every pulse-beat," and he is one of the most indubitably American poets of the early twentieth century. Although he was a contemporary of such Modernists as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot , Sandburg never delved into the sort of dense complexity that defined much of the poetry of his times. Instead, taking a cue from Walt Whitman , Sandburg wrote poetry in everyday language to the rhythms of everyday speech. His poetry sings and celebrates America as a vast land of vast opportunity—and also suggests how far America has yet to go to deliver on its promise of liberty and justice for all. With the free, rolling energy of his unrhymed verses, Sandburg's poetry is among the most prophetic works of twentieth century American literature.

    Biography
Born in Galesburg, Illinois, Carl Sandburg was raised in a relatively poor family of Swedish immigrants in a rural region of the American Midwest. Sandburg's youth was spent working to help support the family home; he had little time for education, and from the age of 11 he worked in the wheat fields, as well as taking oddjobs as a bricklayer, barber, and truck driver.
