Description
A timeless selection of brilliant short stories that won William Saroyan a position among the foremost, most widely popular writers of America when it first appeared in 1934.With the greatest of ease William Saroyan flew across the literary skies in 1934 with the publication of The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze and Other Stories . One of the first American writers to describe the immigrant experience in the U.S., Saroyan created characters who were Armenians, Jews, Chinese, Poles, Africans, and the Irish. The title story touchingly portrays the thoughts of a very young writer, dying of starvation. All of the tales were written during the great depression and reflect, through pathos and humor, the mood of the nation in one of its greatest times of want.

These stories were popular during the Great Depression and reflected the immigrant experience and the struggles of that time. Saroyan grew up in Fresno, the center of Armenian-Americans in California, which served as the basis for many of his settings. Despite the difficulties of life during the Depression era, Saroyan's work nonetheless contained a ray of hope and optimism about life that expresses the indomitable spirit of those immigrants who helped to build America.

Life
Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, the son of an Armenian immigrant. His father moved to New Jersey in 1905. He was a small vineyard owner, who had been educated as a Presbyterian minister. At a certain point his father was forced to take farm-laboring work, and he died in 1911. At the age of four, William was placed in the Fred Finch Orphanage in Oakland, California, together with his brothers—an experience he later described in his writing. Five years later, the family reunited in Fresno, where his mother, Takoohi, had obtained work in a cannery. In 1921, Saroyan attended technical school to learn to type, but left at the age of fifteen; his mother had shown him some of his father's writings, and he decided to become a writer. Saroyan continued his education on his own, supporting himself by taking odd jobs. At the San Francisco Telegraph Company, for example, he worked as an office manager. A few of his early short articles were published in

Albeit forgotten, William Saroyan is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century along with John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, John Updike and others. William Saroyan, was born on August 31, 1908 in a Californian town of Fresno in an Armenian family of Armenak Saroyan and Takoohi Saroyan. In 1939 and 1940 William Saroyan's "My Heart's in the Highlands" and "The Time of Your Life" were staged for theater and "Love's Old Sweet Song" opened on Broadway and he received New York Critics Circle Award. The place is Ithaca, in California's San Joaquin Valley. The time is World War II. The family is the Macauley's a mother, sister, and three brothers whose struggles and dreams reflect those of America's second-generation immigrants.. In particular, fourteen-year-old Homer, determined to become one of the fastest telegraph messengers in the West, finds himself caught between reality and illusion as delivering his messages of wartime death, love, and money brings him face-to-face with human emotion at its most naked and raw. Gentle, poignant and richly autobiographical, this delightful novel shows us the boy becoming the man in a world that even in the midst of war, appears sweeter, safer and more livable than out own.
