VOLTAIRE'S BASTARDS
The Dictatorship of Reason in the West
By John Ralston Saul
The Free Press, 1992 This jeremiad on the evils of contemporary rationalism seems to have touched a nerve. It's been a steady bestseller in several countries and has reportedly been read by such people as the Canadian prime minister and the Czech premier. It's also elevated John Ralston Saul to celebrity status in Canada and elsewhere. He made the Utne Reader's list of "100 Visionaries" in 1995 and was asked to give the prestigious Massey Lectures for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that same year. Voltaire and his contemporaries thought that if people became experts in many different fields they would eventually uncover all that was unknown and thus advance knowledge in general. By fostering expertise, they believed they were laying the foundations for a new civilization of Renaissance individuals. But what has happened is the exact opposite, in Saul's view. He goes on to explore what he takes to be the fundamental incompatibility between democracy and contemporary rational governments. Because rationalism has been reduced to a system of management and administration it is at bottom incapable of guiding human affairs, he insists. "The decision-making process ... is profoundly different from the administrative process. One is organized and reflective. The other is linear and structured. One attempts to waste time usefully in order to understand and to build consensus. The other aims at speed and delivery. One is done of the people. The other is done for the people."

House of Reckoning: A Novel List Price: Price:
Description
After the untimely death of her mother and the arrest of her father for killing a man in barroom brawl, fourteen-year-old Sarah Crane is forced to grow up fast. Left in the cold care of a foster family and alienated at school, Sarah befriends classmate Nick Dunnigan, a former mental patient still plagued by voices and visions, and the eccentric art instructor Bettina Phillips, a mentor eager to nurture Sarah’s talent for painting. But within the walls of Bettina’s ancestral mansion, Sarah finds that monstrous images from the house’s dark history seem to flow unbidden from her paintbrush—images echoed by Nick’s chilling hallucinations. It seems the violence and fury of long-dead generations have finally found a gateway from the grave into the world of the living. And Sarah and Nick have found a power they never had: to take control, and take revenge.
Customer Reviews
Great Book from the inimitable John Saul House of Reckoning is a great read! I've been reading John Saul since the 1970's and have enjoyed most of them. House of Reckoning serves up just the right amount of chills and supernatural suspense without the gory, bloody, chainsawed-corpse-on-every-other-page crap that seems to be the typical fare in this genre. I read supernatural, suspense thrillers to be entertained, not grossed out. I found this book to be typical of John Saul in that it grabbed my attention and kept me engrossed until the end. I had a hard time putting it down. It reminded me of some of his earlier works and it was well worth reading. It's not the greatest book I've ever read, but it doesn't have to be. It's a good read and I highly recommend it.

We have Canadian public health care defender Roy Romanow traveling around the country and abroad to come up with a new vision for health care in Canada. We need a another expert's health vision as much as we need another hole in the ground. The problem is not that we spend too much in health care, the problem is not even about the debate of public, or private health care, as the most important problem I have come to realize is the corporatism mentality of our leadership. misspent

Yes, I have been trying to rationalize what was wrong in the Saskatchewan health care system and I found out that the most important problem was a leadership focused on drilling holes in the ground as long as there was unanimous consensus within the health leadership. Earlier in 1991, I implemented the first in house microcomputer health care payroll system in Gravelbourg, yet the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) misused millions of dollars in the Stargarden payroll system, then they misused other millions of dollars in the SAP-ping payroll system, and who knows what kind of health payroll system they have today. The Saskatchewan Government with the participation of SAHO have misspent dozens and dozens of millions of dollars in the Saskatchewan Health Information Network (SHIN), yet nobody is speaking out about the continuation of drilling holes in the ground.

My favourite moment is when Joeys father is outside the house with Mary Anne and Allison in it. I like it because it has much tension, other parts also have tension, but I like this part more. It is also a part with misunderstanding. Joeys father did not want to hurt Mary Anne or Allison, but because he lumped through a door they did not know it, so they shot him.
I would recommend this to other students. It is a very nice book, with mystery, tension and compassion. It has 370 pages, that is a drawback, but because it is a very nice book, you read right through it. III The story took place in Canaan, New Jersey in the U.S. and in Sugarloaf, California. The family Carpenter lives in Canaan and later Mary Anne, Allison and Logan move to Sugerloaf. In Sugarloaf Ted, Audry and Joey Wilkenson live. When Ted and Audry are dead, Mary Anne, Allison and Logan come and live there; Mary Anne is Joeys guardian.

PHOTO: JOHN FOLEY Story of a Nation
the question, What are the great events in Canadian history? responded by travelling into the past to discover the moments, both familiar and unexpected, that shaped our nation. This is an excerpt from John Ralston Saul's contribution, "D-Day": Perhaps the oddest thing about D-Day was how long so many soldiers had to wait to die so fast. Most had been in Britain two, three, even four years, leading a strange, unreal yet real life of waiting. Of course they trained while they waited. They prepared. And they were together in a way adults never are in civilian life. Doubly so. After all, they were in a foreign/not-foreign land as participants and yet observers of a great social drama. And they were in regiments that were usually miniature reconstitutions of their hometowns and regions.
There were several regiments to pick from in Winnipeg. The volunteers all chose in the hope of getting overseas quickly. The lucky ones, it turned out, were the unluckiest, because they chose the Winnipeg Grenadiers and found themselves in Hong Kong. And then the survivors found themselves in Japanese camps.

Culture and Foreign Policy - Introduction John Ralston Saul
Culture and Foreign Policy
Republished with permission a) Observations on Canada's Image Abroad From mid-July to mid-August, while considering this paper, I was moving about in France and Britain. My general impression of Canada - reading the papers, listening to the radio and watching television the way anyone might - was reasonably positive. On book-review days there would be Canadian books reviewed prominently in a number of papers; sometimes two on the same page, as in Le Monde, thus creating a large block and a theme. There was a Canadian film enjoying attention and success in Paris. The European gave a page to a Canadian film musical about AIDS. On a single day in London I noticed a Canadian book prominently reviewed in most papers; a controversy throughout the media over a Canadian television series about World War II; BBC radio was featuring an interview with Leonard Cohen. The bookstores I frequent in Paris and London were featuring several Canadian books on their front tables, among the most important publications of the local season. And while an innovative Anglophone Canadian opera director was being lauded at the Aix Festival and throughout the press for his revolutionary interpretation of The Magic Flute, an astonishing Francophone Canadian Theatre creator was the star at the Edinburgh Festival where he was experimenting with a new play on the theme of Hiroshima. There were seven or eight other Canadian companies from across the country at the same festival.

John Ralston Saul
Award-winning essayist and novelist, John Ralston Saul has had a growing impact on political and economic thought in many countries. Declared a “prophet” by TIME magazine, he is included in the prestigious Utne Reader’s list of the world’s 100 leading thinkers and visionaries. His works have been translated into more than a dozen languages.
In his latest book, A Fair Country: Telling Truths about Canada, Saul unveils 3 founding myths. He argues that the famous “peace, order, and good government” that supposedly defines Canada is a distortion of the country’s true nature. Every single document before the BNA Act, he points out, used the phrase “peace, welfare, and good government,” demonstrating that the well-being of its citizenry was paramount. He also argues that Canada is a Métis nation, heavily influenced and shaped by aboriginal ideas: egalitarianism, a proper balance between individual and group, and a penchant for negotiation over violence are all aboriginal values that Canada absorbed. Another obstacle to progress, Saul argues, is that Canada has an increasingly ineffective elite, a colonial non-intellectual business elite that doesn’t believe in Canada. It is critical that we recognize these aspects of the country in order to rethink its future.
In The Collapse of Globalism and the Reinvention of the World he confronts the reigning economic ideology known as globalization. Far from being an inevitable force, Saul believes globalization is already breaking up into contradictory pieces and that citizens are reasserting their national interests in both positive and destructive ways. The Publishers Weekly review concluded: “Needless to say, Saul will have no fans among the tax cutters and free trade proselytizers, but his salient analysis is as accessible and relevant to the small shop owner as it is to the CEO of a multinational corporation.”
