Religious Experience and the Divisible Self: William James (and Frederic Myers) as Theorist(s) of Religion
  • Ann Taves Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA 91711
  • Abstract
Scholars have understood William James's unattributed reference to a discovery made in 1886, which he described as “the most important step forward in psychology since [he had] been a student of that science,” as a reference to the British psychical researcher Frederic Myers, rather than, as I argue, the French psychologist Pierre Janet. Correctly understood, this discovery illuminates the experimental (Janet) and theoretical (Myers) underpinnings of The Varieties of Religious Experience , surfaces the comparative method and the experimentally based theory of the divisible self that informed James's work, and clarifies James's efforts to explain how persons might subjectively experience a presence that they take to be an external power, when such was not necessarily the case . Approaching the Varieties in this fashion allows us to specify more clearly the kinds of experience that most interested James. This, in turn, circumscribes his explanation of religious experience and, in my view, makes it more compelling.

Williams Family from Evansville, Indiana The Williams Family in 1944 Walter Charles Williams Marie Louise Williams We will miss you folks! Patriarch Walter Charles Williams passed away on July 2, 2004 at Mercy Hospital from a blood infection. He passed peacefully in his sleep. He was admitted to the hospital on the night of June 30th to get stronger antibiotics but quickly lost consciousness when the infection entered his bloodstream. He was in no pain at all. We all count him lucky to have had minimal illness throughout his entire life. The infection just continually made him more tired until he went into a coma-like condition. He was only two months shy of being 96 years old. Walter will be buried with Marie Louise , his wife of over 70 years who died in October of 2002, at Camellia Memorial Lawn in Rancho Cordova according to his wishes and in view of the Sierra Nevada mountains he loved. The family requests no flowers please. A memorial will be scheduled later at the graveside. Walter had the privilege of witnessing most of a century pass and probably the most interesting century ever in human history. At 8 years old he watched soldiers go off to World War I. He was born in 1908 before autos, airplanes and radios were common. Yet he watched men land on the moon and even participated in the effort at Aerojet. He lived to see his family grow to about 33 people from coast to coast including grandchildren, great grandchildren and spouses. He became an orphan at a young age and was raised by his older sisters. He also was the last of his large family to pass on. And the last of his whole generation in the extended family. You can view

    Myth and Mystery of UFOs

    Bullard, Thomas E
When United Airlines workers reported a UFO at O’Hare Airport in November 2006, it was met with the typical denials and hush-up that usually accompany such sightings. But when a related story broke the record for hits at the Chicago Tribune’s website, it was clear that such unexplained objects continued to occupy the minds of fascinated readers. Why, wonders Thomas Bullard, don’t such persistent sightings command more urgent attention from scientists, scholars, and mainstream journalists? The answer, in part, lies in Bullard’s wide-ranging magisterial survey of the mysterious, frustrating, and ever-evolving phenomenon that refuses to go away and our collective efforts to understand it. In his trailblazing book, Bullard views those efforts through the lens of mythmaking, discovering what UFO accounts tell us about ourselves, our beliefs, and the possibility of visitors from beyond.

Personal Quote: "I throw myself into my work. It's exhausting. It's time-consuming. I feel guilty for not being with my kids all the time, But then when I'm home with my children and devoting my life to my kids, in the back of my mind I'm wondering whether I'll ever get employed again. So there's a constant battle of doing what fuels me and what I do best. And also, being there for my kids."
Vanessa got her start singing and dancing in school productions and signed her high school yearbook with a promise to "see you on Broadway." She won a performing scholarship to Syracuse University, she left school and tried to make it in New York show business. Soon Vanessa began to enter beauty contests, and in 1983 she made history when she was the first black woman to be chosen Miss America. What no one knew is that she had posed in the buff for Penthouse.

    The Path May 1892
MESMERISM AND THE HIGHER SELF William Brehon
Recently a book on the subject of the "Rationale of Mesmerism" having been published in London, written by Mr. A. P. Sinnett, I read in it some astounding statements about the relation of the higher self to Mesmerism. He says that it is the higher self that acts in the ease of those mesmerized subjects who show clairvoyance, clairaudience, and the like, of a high order. That is to say, the views expressed amount to the doctrine that pure spirit, which the Higher Self is, can be acted on and affected by the gross physical power of mesmerism. This idea seems to be quite contrary to all that we have read in Theosophical literature on the philosophy of man and his complex nature. For if there is anything clearly stated in that, it is that the higher self cannot be affected in this manner. I T is a part of the supreme spirit, and as such cannot be made to go and come at the beck of a mesmerizer. Mesmeric force is purely material, although of a finer sort of materiality than gas. It is secreted by the physical body in conjunction with the astral man within, and has not a particle of spirituality about it further than that spirit is immanent in the whole universe. And when it is brought to bear on the willing or unwilling subject, the portion of the nature of the latter which is waked up, or rather separated from the rest, is the astral man. Clairvoyance and similar phenomena are explicable by the knowledge of the inner man, and, that being so, it is straining a point and degrading a great idea to say the higher self is involved. For the inner astral man has the real organs which partially function through the one we know. The real eye and ear are there. So what happens in mesmeric trance is that the outer eye and ear are paralyzed for the time, and the brain is made to report what is seen and heard by the inner senses.
