Jump to: navigation search Previous (Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de Laune) Next (Anne Sullivan) Anne Sexton in 1974 Anne Sexton (November 9, 1928 – October 4, 1974), born Anne Gray Harvey , was a modern American poet, children's author, and a playwright. She is best known for her poetry belonging to the confessional school of poets in the style of other neo-formalists such as George Starbuck, Sylvia Plath John Berryman , and Theodore Roethke. Although, these poets, including Sexton, cannot always be categorized or limited by one type of form, they broke new ground by delivering prose that expressed their innermost dialog, with language that was provocative, and which veered away from romantic and standard forms of poetry. Sexton's poetry was characterized by incisive metaphors, unexpected rhythms, and precise wording that covered a spectrum of feelings that many people can relate to. Her poetry challenged the myths and superficial values subscribed to by the social status quo, while expressing her fears, anger, and struggle against mental illness.

    Biography:
    The Parsonage
Thornton (see also Haworth. parsonage there in April, 1820. Haworth Church. In "Anne, dear gentle Anne was quite different in appearance from the others, and she was her aunt's favourite. Her hair was a very pretty light brown, and fell on her neck in graceful curls. She had lovely violet-blue eyes, fine pencilled eyebrows and a clear almost transparent complexion. She still pursued her studies and especially her sewing, under the surveillance of her aunt. " (Chitham, 1991, p. 39) One of Anne's activities during the holidays was playing at the Gondals with Emily. The first of Anne's known poems, "Verses by Lady Geralda", dates from Christmas 1836. The next, "Alexander and Zenobia", is dated July 1st, 1837. Both are set firmly in the world of Gondal. They deal with clearly fictional characters, and bear their signatures. Though there is disagreement over the categorization of Anne's poetry into Gondal and non-Gondal poetry, most of the poems which are 'signed' by Gondal characters seem to have been written during or immediately after periods of proximity to Emily. Anne and Charlotte do not appear to have been close during their time at Roe Head (Charlotte's letters almost never mention Anne) but Charlotte was concerned about the health of her sister. At some point prior to December 1837, Anne became seriously ill and underwent a religious crisis. (Mrs. Gaskell incorrectly gives the time of Anne's illness as a year later, in

POEMS
BY
CURRER, ELLIS,
AND ACTON,
BELL.
A copy of the rare first edition of the three sisters' book of poems, 'Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell'
Published by the London firm of Aylott and Jones in 1846, it sold for the grand sum of 4 shillings (which, in today's currency is 20 pence), and proved a dismal failure selling only two copies during the first year. Leeds Intelligencer , and Fraser's Magazine , published her poem 'The Narrow Way' under her pseudonym, Acton Bell. Four months earlier, Fraser's Magazine had also published her long poem 'The Three Guides'. On a visit to the Parsonage in December 1848, Ellen Nussey 'observed a slow smile stealing over Anne's face' as she sat reading before the fire one evening. When she asked her why, Anne replied, "Only because I see they have inserted one of my poems" Anne's poems are generally divided into two categories: the 'Gondal', and the 'non-Gondal'. The former are the ones that she wrote as part of the fantasy world - Gondal - which she created and developed throughout her childhood and youth with Emily: most of these where written while Anne was in close proximity with her sister. When the two sisters were parted, Anne rarely ever wrote Gondal verses: what she did write form the second category. In these, Anne recorded various prominent occasions and incidents that sh e encountered at various stages in her life, or expressed her 'anxieties' and 'feelings' related to such occasions and events: typical are the many despondent verses that express the home-sickness, loneliness, and depression which she experienced while working as a governess at Thorp Green. Also included are a variety of religious and love poems, and it is only through these verses that we are aware of Anne's strong feelings for her father's curate, William Weightman.

Born near Henderson, Kentucky Ann Mayes Rutledge was the third of ten children born to Mary and James Rutledge. In 1829, her father, along with John M. Cameron, founded New Salem, Illinois . Many of the facts of her life are lost to history, but many historians believe that she was the first true love of Abraham Lincoln . The exact nature of the Lincoln-Rutledge relationship has been fiercely debated by historians and non-historians for over a century. It is fairly well established the two were at least friends. citation needed The story goes that Rutledge was engaged to marry John MacNamar, a dubious character who left for New York and promised to marry her upon his return. Rutledge and Lincoln met after this and supposedly fell in love while McNamar was away and she promised to marry Lincoln after MacNamar released her. For a time Rutledge and MacNamar exchanged letters, but his letters became more formal and "less ardent in turn" and eventually ceased completely.

40. Anne Conway
Brief discussion of her unusual career, with bibliography.
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~worc0337/authors/anne.conway.html
Philosophers: Lady Anne Finch Conway (1631-1679 CE) Links Bibliography She was born in 1631, a week after the death of her father (Sir Heneage Finch, Speaker of the House of Commons). She was tutored (probably pretty perfunctorily) at home, where she learnt Latin (later adding Greek and Hebrew), and showed signs of considerable intellectual curiosity and ability. The Platonist, Henry More, had been the tutor of one of her brothers at Cambridge, and this led to his correspondence with her on the philosophy of Descartes. More had corresponded with Descartes, and started off as a champion, with reservations, of Cartesian philosophy. His religious-based reservations, especially concerning Descartes' mechanistic account of the world, later grew into rejection. The correspondence between More and his "heroine pupil" continued after her marriage to Edward Conway in 1651, though their relationship changed from one between tutor and pupil to one between equals. More stated that he had "scarce ever met with any Person, Man or Woman, of better Natural parts than Lady Conway". Anne Conway followed a particularly unusual intellectual course not only for a woman, but for anyone at the time. From Cartesian philosophy she investigated the Lurianic cabbala, and finally converted to Quakerism (generally loathed and feared at the time).
