Nevil Shute (1899-1960) - original name Nevil Shute Norway British-born Australian novelist, an accomplished storyteller, whose best-known work, ON THE BEACH (1957), was adapted for the screen in 1959. The picture became one of the most celebrated anti-Bomb films, and attracted much attention in Moscow because it was the first full-length American feature to have a premiere in the Soviet Union. Shute was educated as an aeronautical engineer and he used his expertise on technical issues and knowledge of aviation in his books. His novels PIED PIPER (1942) and A TOWN LIKE ALICE (1959) have also been made into major films. "A beautiful aircraft is the expression of the genius of a great engineer who is also a great artist. It is impossible for that man to carry out the whole of the design himself; he works through a design office staffed by a hundred draughtsmen or more. A hundred minds, each with their own less competent ideas, are striving to modify the chief designer's original conception. If the design is to appear in the end as a great artistic unity, the chief designer must be a man of immensely powerful will, capable of imposing his idea and his way of doing things on each of his hundred draughtsmen, so that each one of them is too terrified to insert any of his own ideas." (from No Highway Nevil Shute was born in Ealing, Middlesex. His father was Arthur Hamilton Norway, C.B., an assistant secretary of the General Post Office in London, and his mother was the former Mary Louisa Gadsden. Shute was educated at schools in Oxford, Shrewsbury, and Woolwich. After witnessing the Easter Rising in Dublin, where he was a volunteer stretcher-bearer, Shute entered Balliol College, Oxford. He spent the later stages of World War I in military service and then continued his studies in Oxford, graduating in 1922.

NEVIL SHUTE

Click here for audio of Episode 110. Today, we meet Nevil Shute Norway. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. D o you remember On The Beach ? It was a wrenching, understated story told through the eyes of the last survivors of nuclear war, waiting to die in Australia. Thirty years ago, the best-selling book, and a fine movie based on it, made a disturbingly realistic case against the nuclear stalemate. The author was Nevil Shute Norway, born in England in 1899. He wrote under the name Nevil Shute. After serving in WW-I, he trained at Oxford to be an aeronautical engineer. From 1922 to 1933 he worked in airplane and dirigible companies. He also published his first four novels, one of which was made into a movie. He published nothing more until 1938. During that time he formed an airplane manufacturing company called Airspeed, Ltd. When he left the company to join WW-II in 1939, he'd built it up to a thousand employees. He went back to his books in 1938 and wrote roughly one a year until he died in Australia in 1960.

Noel Strachan, the main character, is partner of a firm of solicitors in Chancery Lane, Owen, Dalhousie, and Peters. Arthur Paget had been killed in a motor car accident and wanted to redraft his will to make a trust in favour of his sister Jean and her tow children. Noel took that case. He found out something about it and talks about it to his colleague.
I chose this passage, because the way of doing shows him exactly. He likes to think a bit before taking any precipitate action and every move is very well-considered. In the end of this part his partner says he’s a ‘Fairy Godfather’. I find that that description does fit to him, since he is like a father of Jean. He orders Jean’s business often and I think the age, he is about seventy, is important on my feeling. An old man correspond with a wise (wo)man, as they have knowledge of life.

Nevil Shute's Views on Modern Art
Jack and Jane Dorman are sheep ranchers in Australia. After many long years of hard work and penny-pinching, suddenly the price of wool skyrockets and they discover that they are wealthy for the first time in their adult lives. This excerpt from the Far Country is the only place in a Nevil Shute novel, of which I am aware, where he implicitly expresses his views on "modern art". "Jack," said Jane, "don’t let’s see anyone tonight. Let’s just have a very, very good dinner and go to a theatre. Any theatre." "Don’t you want to see Angie?" "Angie can wait till tomorrow," said her mother. "I want to see a theatre. Angie’s probably seen them all. Let’s go out alone." "All right," he said. "I’ll go down and see what we can get seats for." She said, "And I want a bottle of champagne with dinner." " My word," he said. "What’ll I order for dinner- mutton?" "You dare! Oysters and roast duck, or as near as you can get to it."

Shute, Nevil (Nevil Shute Norway) , (1899-1960)
Nevil Shute was born in Middlesex, England. His first ambition was to be a Royal Flying corps gunnery officer but he was unsuccessful in his medical tests. He was in 1918, for a short time, in the British Infantry prior to studying at Oxford University. He was employed as an engineer by the de Havilland Aircraft Company in 1923. In 1926, using the psuedonym 'Nevil Shute', he produced his first novel. 'Shute' resigned from de Havilland in 1924 in order to work on the abortive R100 airship project, which was subsequently suspended in 1930 when a rival airship suffered an ill-starred calamity. 'Shute' involved in starting another company which manufactured aircraft, Airspeed Ltd, where he held the position of managing dorector until 1938 when the popularity of his two novels (1928) and (1932) persuaded him to become a full-time author.

English-born Australian novelist.
Trained as an aeronautical engineer, Shute drew on technical detail in his fiction. His early works include So Disdained (1928) and What Happened to the Corbetts (1939), a foretaste of the bombing of civilians in World War II. After the war he settled in Australia, where he set his later novels. Reflecting a growing despair about the future of humanity, they include A Town Like Alice (1950; film, 1956) and his best-known work, On The Beach (1957; film, 1959), a vivid picture of the nuclear annihilation of the human race.

Essay
Fred Erisman The Technological Utopias of Thorstein Veblen and Nevil Shute Technology, like politics, makes for strange bedfellows. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the congruence of the ideas of the NorwegianAmerican economist, Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929), and the British popular novelist, Nevil Shute (1899-1960). Their lives overlap by a scant third of a century, and seem, on the surface, antagonistic; Veblen devotes his academic career to outspoken criticisms of business and commerce, while Shute, by training an aeronautical engineer, has considerable success as an entrepreneurial businessman in the aircraft industry before turning to fulltime authorship.' Nevertheless, the social ideas of the one resonate in the fiction of the other, for both are working within the long-standing tradition of the technological utopia, and their regard for the potential inherent in the proper exercise of technology provides the basis for a provocative debate over how a humane society might function effectively within a technological world.' At the heart of Veblen's socio-economic thought are three broad concepts: the instinct of idle curiosity, the instinct of workmanship, and the parental bent. Emerging in The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) and The Theory of Business Enterprise (1904), developed explicitly in The Instinct of Workmanship (1914) and The Higher Learning in America (1918), and broadly expanded in The Engineers and the Price System (1921), these concepts at last form the foundation of Veblen's technocratic utopia, a society in which their application by enlightened engineers and others of the technologically adept will overcome the corruption that permeates the world of capital and commerce. Freed of its corruption, society will then proceed to a more harmonious, albeit relentlessly secular, relationship with technology and the world.

Home Celebrities : Mr Norway Contact! Who was the popular British novelist, who once worked as an aircraft designer, and also enjoyed racing a Jaguar car at Phillip Island in Australia? He raced incognito under the name of "Mr. N. S. Norway", but was better known by the name initialled "N.S." - Nevil Shute. Nevil Shute Norway at Phillip Island, April 1957
Photo: Peter D'Abbs - Autopics.com.au Nevil Shute Norway chose to write under a shortened version of his name. He was of the opinion that Vickers, his employer at the time, "would probably take a poor view of an employee who wrote novels on the side". His wide experience with aircraft included working as the "Chief Calculator" for the R100, one of two competing airship projects in Britain in the late 1920s. In today's computer age, it is hard to imagine a time when teams of people were employed to perform complex calculations! The R100 was built by a private enterprise team, competing with the government R101 team. This program ended with the crash of the R101 in October 1930, with the loss of 48 of the 54 on board. The R100 team was headed up by Barnes Wallis, later the designer of the "Dambuster" bombs. Perhaps less well known is the fact that much later Wallis was also the designer of the Parkes radio telescope in NSW; still one of the world's leading astronomical observatories.
