Felicia Hemans September 25 ), was an English poet.
Early life and works
She was born Felicia Dorothea Browne in Liverpool , a granddaughter of the Venetian consul in that city. Her father's business soon brought the family to Denbighshire in North Wales , where she spent her youth. They made their home near Abergele and St. Asaph Flintshire ), and it is clear that she came to regard herself as Welsh by adoption, later referring to Wales as "Land of my childhood, my home and my dead". Her first poems, dedicated to the Prince of Wales , were published in Liverpool in , when she was only fifteen, arousing the interest of no less a person than Percy Bysshe Shelley , who briefly corresponded with her. She quickly followed them up with "England and Spain" [1808] and "The domestic affections", published in 1812, the year of her marriage to Captain Alfred Hemans, an Irish army officer some years older than herself. The marriage took her away from Wales, to Daventry in Northamptonshire until 1814.

Camel's nose
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The camel's nose is a metaphor for a situation where permitting some small undesirable situation will allow gradual and unavoidable worsening. A typical usage is this, from U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater in 1958:
This bill and the foregoing remarks of the majority remind me of an old Arabian proverb: "If the camel once gets his nose in the tent, his body will soon follow." If adopted, the legislation will mark the inception of aid, supervision, and ultimately control of education in this country by the federal authorities.
According to Geoffrey Nunberg , the image entered the English language in the middle of the 19th century. An early example is a fable printed in 1858 in which an Arab miller allows a camel to stick its nose into his bedroom, then other parts of its body, until the camel is entirely inside and refuses to leave. Lydia Sigourney wrote another version, a widely reprinted poem for children, in which the camel enters a shop because the workman does not forbid it at any stage. The 1858 example above says, "The Arabs repeat a fable," and Sigourney says in a footnote, "To illustrate the danger of the first approach of evil habit, the Arabs have a proverb, "

Lydia Huntley Sigourney had a private school for girls in Hartford in 1815. She taught Alice Cogswell and her sisters along with other girls from Hartford. The Cogswell sisters were in her school and that was how Lydia met Alice. She wrote, "I could not forget the varied expressions that Alice displayed in her hazel eyes to show her intelligence, naïveté, irony or love." She wrote about how Alice was silent but loved in her class and she asked Lydia to..."'please teach Alice something.' Great was her delight when called forth to take her part." Lydia's heart was touched by Alice. You can see a reenactment of Lydia meeting with Gallaudet and Dr. Cogswell by Clicking Here She was a key player in founding the American School for the Deaf. Most of the meetings for starting A.S.D. were held in Lydia's classroom. She also was a friend of Laurent Clerc and helped persuade him to stay at A.S.D and not return to France. Lydia learned to finger-spell so she and Alice could communicate. She used the

I mean look at it, Q: look at all those cul-de-sacs, those streets that turn in on themselves, all the houses that were built to fall apart. All those paper people living in their paper houses, burning the future to stay warm. All the paper kids drinking beer some bum bought for them at the paper convenience store. Everyone demented with the mania of owning things. All the things paper-thin and paper-frail. And all the people, too.
