Description
Between the Age of Innocence and the Age of Experience comes The Age of Huts. This book brings together for the first time all of the poems in Ron Silliman's Age of Huts cycle, including Ketjak, Sunset Debris, The Chinese Notebook, and as well as two key satellite texts, Sitting Up, Standing, Taking Steps, and BART. Each poem offers a radically different approach toward using language to explore the world. One of the founding works of Language Poetry, The Age of Huts is about everything, more or less literally, as each sentence, even each phrase, embarks on its own narrative, linking together to form a large polyphonic investigation of contemporary life. From Ketjak

Language poets
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Language poets (or L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets , after the magazine that bears that name) are an avant garde group or tendency in United States poetry that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In developing their poetics , members of the Language school took as their starting point the emphasis on method evident in the modernist tradition, particularly as represented by Gertrude Stein and Louis Zukofsky . Language poetry is also an example of poetic postmodernism . Its immediate postmodern precursors were the New American poets , a rubric which includes the New York School , the Objectivist poets , the Black Mountain School , the Beat poets, and the San Francisco Renaissance While there is no such thing as a "typical" Language poem, certain aspects of the writing of language poets became heavily identified with this group: writing that actively challenged the " natural presence of a speaker behind the text; writing that emphasized disjunction and the materiality of the signifier ; and prose poetry , especially in longer forms than had previously been favored by English language writers, and other nontraditional and usually nonnarrative forms.

Ron Silliman Ron Silliman is one of the original group of San Francisco language poets. His ongoing long poem, The Alphabet , which now includes ABC Paradise What Toner (1992) and other volumes, will eventually grow to twenty-six booklength installments. Silliman has a preference for eccentric forms of his own invention. The book-length prose-poem Tjanting (1981) is written according to the Fibonacci number sequence, with the result that the number of sentences in each paragraph equals the number of sentences in the previous two paragraphs. Paradise was written as a sequence of paragraphs each of which was written in one sitting, with these paragraphs arranged in "monthly" groupings, and with the whole comprising "a year's diary." In writing what he has named the "new sentence," Silliman frustrates the convention of the poetic line as well as the political implication of closure. In such poems, Silliman says, "Sentence length is the unit of measure." George Hartley has suggested that Stein's Tender Buttons provides Silliman's model for the form. Raised in Albany, California, Silliman attended San Francisco State and Berkeley, worked as an organizer in the prison and tenant movements, was a lobbyist, an editor of the

Book Description
Memoir/Antimemoir presents new works that show the expanse and range of contemporary memoir. The works gathered here reveal memoir as re-invention, as generic interplay, as conversations among works, as travel back and forth and across times and states of mind. One can see in these works the political and psychic stakes involved in self-representation. Features work by C. S. Giscombe, Lisa Jarnot, Shirin Neshat, Edwin Torres, Ron Silliman, Anne Waldman, and Rosmarie Waldrop. Demo to Ink

Silliman's introduction claims that they're in the vanguard of those recording the ``opening'' of the Soviet Union to the West, but in fact these contributors seem to be at least as interested in themselves as in their surroundings. The quartet's contributions are intermingled and nonchronological; the authors explain, ``It should be somewhat unclear . . . just who is speaking.'' Severalpk passages record reactions to events: dismay at the racism displayed by some Russians, smug superiority to an American tour group in a museum. Others explore questions...

SUMMARY "Under Albany is the shadow movement of Ron Silliman's epic of everyday life, The Alphabet. Silliman provides a set of extended, vividly etched, mostly autobiographical, meditations on the background for each of the original 100 sentences of his 1981 poem Albany. This constructivist memoir provides an exquisitely rich exploration of the relation of context to reference, subtext to meaning, back story to presented experience, and composition to poetics. All of Silliman's work unravels and reforms in this exemplary and exhilarating act of attention, recollection, and reflection."
