He later argued that witnessing these extremes turned him into a socialist A religious boy with a great love of literature, his two great heroes were Jesus Christ and Percy Bysshe Shelley . An intelligent boy he did well at school and at 14 entered New York City College . Soon afterwards he had his first story published in a national magazine. Over the next few years Sinclair funded his college education by writing stories for newspapers and magazines. By the age of 17 Sinclair was earning enough money to enable him to move into his own apartment while supplying his parents with a regular income. In January 1901 he borrowed $200 from his uncle and printed a thousand copies of Springtime and Harvest . Followin g two newspaper articles he managed to sell enough copies to repay the loan. In October 1902 Sinclair met the writer Leonard Dalton Abbott . He introduced him to George Davis Herron , a founder of the Rand School of Social Science , and Gaylord Wilshire . All the men were members of the Socialist Party of America , and suggested that he should read the books of Karl Marx Peter Kropotkin Edward Bellamy Karl Kautsky ... One of his most famous books, "The Jungle," 1906, caused such a public uproar that it resulted in two new laws, the Pure Food and Drugs Act and the Meat Inspection Act, both enacted in 1906. The Sinclair family had its roots in the ruined Southern aristocracy. His father, a liquor salesman, was an alcoholic, and his disease coupled with the family’s poverty overshadowed much of Upton’s early life. However, he spent part of his childhood living with his wealthy grandparents, and the extremes that he experienced reportedly influenced him to later become a socialist. In 1988, his family moved to New York. A religious boy who loved literature, Upton did well academically, and when he was 14, he entered New York City College. At 15, he began writing dime novels and ethnic jokes to pay for his studies. In 1897, he enrolled at Columbia University, again paying his way by writing. His first novel, "Springtime and Harvest," was published in 1901, followed in 1903 by "The Journal of Arthur Stirling." Three more novels were published between 1903 and 1906, but all sold poorly. His fame came with the publication of "The Jungle," and the proceeds from its sales were used to establish a commune for left-wing writers called the Helicon Home Colony; within a year, it was destroyed by fire. Now nationally known, Sinclair ran for Congress in New Jersey on the Socialist Party ticket but was unsuccessful. Disagreements over the cause of World War I eventually split the Party, and Sinclair resigned.

For those who think this book is not fit for high school reading because it's "gross, boring and hard to read," please take a moment to think. This is one of the most impactful books on American history after Appeal to Reason by Thomas Paine (for those who think that I forgot Uncle Tom's Cabin , that had no direct effect on the abolition of slavery. It, along with Bleeding Kansas , John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry, Senator Brook's attack on Sumner in Congress, the election of Abraham Lincoln, and numerous other events that led up to the secession of seven states and the form of the Confederacy ultimately leading to the Civil War.) This actually brought a direct reform on packing industries. Also you must remember that you did not have a piece of contaminated meat before you opened this book and started reading. I'd bet you would be somewhat more interested in the book if you did. And of course it's going to be gross, how else are you supposed to rouse the public to action?
