Summary

Beginning
Aussiecon Three, the 57 th World Science Fiction Convention, was held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 2-6 September 1999. Approximately 1870 people attended. The Convention Centre was certainly sufficient for the conventionovercrowding was not a problem. It was a bit diffuse, however, with a very long walk from the Green Room to the panel rooms, and the bid tables, site selection, and cafe somewhat hidden around a corner. I think they planned to have the rooms open at the other end, onto that area, and then discovered that they could not. The Centre was directly connected to our hotel, which turned out to be useful, because there were escalators in the Convention Centre from ground level to the lobby level, while in the hotel, one had to climb a full flight of stairs to get in. The hotel apparently assumes that everyone will enter by car, from the car ramp which does spiral around the hotel up to that level, or will use the single elevator for disabled access (which was actually in the Convention Centre as well). The restaurant situation was strange. Other than the hotel restaurants, the only restaurants close to the hotel and open for dinner were in the Southgate and Crown Casino complexes. This made the selection much more limited than usual, since a lot of the restaurants in these complexes were filled with Melbourne business people (who all seem to dress in (black suits), which made them look too upscale for a quick drop-in by a group of fans. There were two reasonably priced buffets and a food court of variable quality, so there were cheap places. The list of places to get party supplies (or even room snacks) had nothing within walking distanceeverything involved taking a tram.

Norstrilia
by Cordwainer Smith
The Instrumentality of Mankind, Cordwainer Smith's future history, ranks with the greatest creations of science fiction. Set in that future history, Norstrilia is the only SF novel Smith wrote. It tells the story of the boy from the planet Old North Australia (where rich, simple farmers grow the immortality drug Stroon), how he bought Old Earth, and how his visit to Earth changed both him and Earth itself. This new edition of Norstrilia corrects a number of errors and omissions in the previous versions. It adds an appendix containing a full chapter of bridging material written by Smith when he broke Norstrilia into two shorter novels for its original publication as The Planet Buyer and The Underpeople.

55. Norstrilia

NORSTRILIA by Cordwainer Smith (Gollancz)
a review by L J Hurst
This book has never been published in its entirety before in Britain, although a dissected version has been published in two volumes as The Planet Buyer and The Underpeople . Gollancz's publicity has announced that the book is being issued in their Classic SF series but the cover makes no mention of this. Inside the book the table of contents lists a biographical page of detail which when you turn to it is devoid of content, lacking even a page number. The biographical detail actually appears on the back of the dustjacket.
Norstrilia is one of those books more heard of than seen. I was pleased to receive it for review because I'd never seen it in any of its forms, yet everywhere Cordwainer Smith is hailed as an important author. This edition comes with a quotation from David Pringle's Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels on the front, which tends to agree with the three other sources I've consulted- "Vividly drawn and wonderfully suggestive ... confirms that Cordwainer Smith was one of science fiction's most original writers". Re-reading the entry on Norstrilia in David Pringle's book I notice that one of the details he gives about the story (the legality of the hero's computer) is wrong, and I tend to think that that his belief in Smith's originality is also wrong.

General review of all of his work, by John Robinson, from the archive of the No-Eyed Monster fanzine.

THE ROSY GLOOM OF CORDWAINER SMITH By John Robinson There is a rosy gloom in the stories of Cordwainer Smith. They take place in a candy apple universe where the candy is sometimes hard to find. Whether the picture he creates is painted over the gloom or the gloom painted over the picture is difficult to determine. There seems to be (as the cover of the paperback, The Planet Buyer Foundation , but the technology is quite different. Robert Heinlein was immediately dropped because of a decided difference and lack of philosophy. Also, Heinlein has the habit of using other writers' poetry rather than his own. He might have given a plot or two, but not a story. We finally gave up guessing when Galaxy The Planet Buyer Updated April 12, 2001. If you have a comment about these web pages please send a note to the Fanac Webmaster . Thank you.

The Archives
Once again we descended into the dark depths of the library. Despite our previous visit we were unsure of what we would find this time. The dark secrets that lie hidden among the shelves are countless and unimaginable. We were right to be cautious but even our meticulous care was no match for the cunning that lurked in the savage darkness. Rounding a corner we were jumped by a trilogy. We lost two, before they scattered, disappearing into the paper jungle, melting back into the shadow of spines without a trace. We pulled out. There was nothing else we could do. But on our way back to the surface we found an artefact that dated to the late 50's. We took it back to study it and this is what we found...
'Norstrilia' by Cordwainer Smith.
Cordwainer Smith burst on to the SF scene in 1950 with an oblique short story "Scanners live in Vain." And after the publication of the story he vanished. It wasn't until the stories third publication, that the elusive Smith reappeared with a string of bizarre and imaginative short stories that are still some of the most interesting reads around today. The man behind the stories is almost as interesting as one of his stories. His true identity was kept secret until shortly before his death in 1966. A lieutenant in the Operation Planning and Intelligence board during World War II and subsequent advisor to the Kennedy administration Dr. Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger kept his writing talents hidden for the many years of his literary career. Not that Dr Linebarger was ashamed of SF, far from it; he is even quoted as saying that science fiction has attracted more Ph.D's than any other literary genre.
