sophocles View: Poems of Sophocles Books on Sophocles at Amazon Born in 495 B.C. about a mile northwest of Athens, Sophocles was to become one of the great playwrights of the golden age. The son of a wealthy merchant, he would enjoy all the comforts of a thriving Greek empire. He studied all of the arts. By the age of sixteen, he was already known for his beauty and grace and was chosen to lead a choir of boys at a celebration of the victory of Salamis. Twelve years later, his studies complete, he was ready to compete in the City Dionysiaa festival held every year at the Theatre of Dionysus in which new plays were presented.   In his first competition, Sophocles took first prizedefeating none other than Aeschylus himself. More than 120 plays were to follow. He would go on to win eighteen first prizes, and he would never fail to take at least second. An accomplished actor, Sophocles performed in many of his own plays. In the Nausicaa or The Women Washing Clothes, he performed a juggling act that so fascinated his audience it was the talk of Athens for many years. However, the young athenian's voice was comparatively weak, and eventually he would give up his acting career to pursue other ventures.

    Sophocles
Playwright Born: c. 496 B.C. Died: c. 406 B.C. Birthplace: Colonus (now Kolonos), Greece Best known as: Greek dramatist who wrote Oedipus Tyrannus Sophocles was a Greek dramatist whose long career came between his contemporaries Aeschylus and Euripides. A respected public figure of Athens, he was both a priest and a general (an elected position), but he is best known for the many dramatic prizes he won after 468 B.C. Like the elder Aeschylus, Sophocles was known as an innovator. He is credited with introducing a third actor (the tradition was two), expanding the chorus from 12 to 15 players and replacing the trilogy form with self-contained tragedies. It is estimated he wrote more than 120 plays, of which only seven are extant (hundreds of fragments survived also). His most famous play, Oedipus Tyrannus (also known as Oedipus Rex or Oedipus the King ), is considered by many to be the apex of Greek dramatic irony. His other plays include

Sophocles' scholarship was thought to be of unassailable veracity for much of history, but modern thinkers have found some key flaws in his methods of thought, and it's now believed that Sophistries are logically fallacious forms of reasoning.
edit Youth
Sophocles grew up a confused youth, different from the rest of the boys his age in that he didn't take the sodomy latent in society. Some called him "queer" for this persuasion of his, but he never seemed to regret the decision. Can't say as I blame him... Anyway, Sophocles enrolled in the finest of Athenian academies where he quickly developed a talent for formulating arguments so confusing and obfuscatory that his professors could do little to refute him. Some of his early work is preserved in a correspondence with one of his instructors. Here Sophocles is attempting to demonstrate the Atomic theory of matter, then newly formulated:

By Kevin L Nenstiel As depicted by Sophocles, the title character of the play Philoctetes becomes a Job-like figure, an icon of suffering and a conduit through which those around him can experience the reality of God. Indeed, he is not just a conduit for the divine by his presence and the reality of his suffering, he actually becomes a divine figure in his own right. Though not born a demigod, his strength and resilience allow him to approach the incarnations of immortality unscathed. In this, he becomes a sort of Biblical prophet, on a first-name basis with the gods themselves. However, like Jeremiah, he is not recognized for his divinity initially. Indeed, when he is first stricken with his painful malady, as Odysseus shamelessly relates, his miserable moaning and wailing is such that his companions are distracted, and cannot perform their obsequies to the gods. In consequence, he is put ashore untended on the deserted island of Lemnos, to ensure that the other Greeks have liberty to pursue their war on Troy ( Philoctetes lines 4-11).
