Southwell, Robert
(b. 1561, Horsham St. Faith, Norfolk, Eng.d. March 4, 1595, London), English poet and martyr remembered for his saintly life as a Jesuit priest and missionary during a time of Protestant persecution and for his religious poetry. Southwell was educated at Jesuit colleges in France and in Rome. In 1585 he was ordained priest and made prefect of studies at the English College at Rome. He returned to England as a missionary in 1586, when he became chaplain to Anne Howard and spiritual adviser to her husband, the 1st Earl of Arundel , a recusant imprisoned in the Tower of London. Southwell lived in concealment at Arundel House, writing letters of consolation to persecuted Roman Catholics and making pastoral journeys. His An Epistle of Comfort was printed secretly in 1587; other letters circulated in manuscript. Southwell was arrested in 1592 while celebrating mass. He was tortured in an attempt to make him reveal the whereabouts of his fellow priests and imprisoned in the Tower of London in solitary confinement. In 1595 he was tried for treason under the anti-Catholic penal laws of 1585 and executed. Southwell's devotional lyrics and prose treatises and epistles reflect the ardent piety of his life. His best works achieve an unusual directness and simplicity, and his use of paradox and striking imagery is akin to that of the later Metaphysical poets. He is the foremost representative of Roman Catholic letters in Elizabethan England.

Southwell, Robert, , English Jesuit poet, venerated by Roman Catholics as a martyr, b. Norfolk. He was brought up a Catholic and educated abroad, mainly at Douai. In 1580 he made his simple vows as a Jesuit, and in 1586 at his own request, desiring martyrdom as he said, he was sent to England with Father Garnett to minister to the oppressed Catholics. For six years he was active in the south of England as their pastor, but in 1592 he was arrested and imprisoned. After being tortured he was tried for treason, and on admitting his priesthood he was hanged. His poetry is deeply religious, extolling the beauty and magnificence of the spiritual in contrast to the material. Southwell's major work is St. Peter's Complaint See his complete poems (1872, repr. 1971); biography by C. Devlin (new ed. 1967). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

Biography of the English poet, Jesuit, and martyr. He was hanged in 1595

Venerable Robert Southwell
Poet, Jesuit martyr ; born at Horsham St. Faith's Norfolk England , in 1561; hanged at Tyburn, 21 February, 1595. His grandfather, Sir Richard Southwell, had been a wealthy man and a prominent courtier in the reign of Henry VIII . It was Richard Southwell who in 1547 had brought the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, to the block, and Surrey had vainly begged to be allowed to "fight him in his shirt". Curiously enough their respective grandsons, Father Southwell and Philip, Earl of Arundel , were to be the most devoted of friends and fellow-prisoners for the Faith . On his mother's side the Jesuit was descended from the Copley and Shelley families , whence a remote connexion may be established between him and the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley Robert Southwell was brought up a Catholic , and at a very early age was sent to be educated at Douai , where he was the pupil in philosophy of a Jesuit of extraordinary austerity of life , the famous Leonard Lessius . After spending a short time in Paris he begged for admission into the Society of Jesus a boon at first denied. This disappointment elicited from the boy of seventeen some passionate laments, the first of his verses of which we have record. On 17 Oct., 1578, however, he was admitted at

St Robert Southwell (c. 21 February 1595) was a Jesuit priest and poet. He was hanged at Tyburn , and became a Catholic martyr . He was born at Horsham St. Faith's , in Norfolk. He was brought up in a Catholic family, and educated at Douai . Thence he moved to Paris, where he was placed under a Jesuit father, Thomas Darbyshire . In 1580 he joined the Society of Jesus , after a two years novitiate , passed mostly at Tournai . In spite of his youth he was made prefect of studies in the English college of the Jesuits at Rome, and was ordained priest in 1584. It was in that year that an act was passed, forbidding any English-born subject of the Queen who had entered into priests' orders in the Roman Catholic Church since her accession to remain in England longer than forty days on pain of death. But Southwell at his own request was sent to England in 1586 as a Jesuit missionary with Henry Garnett . He went from one Catholic family to another, administering the rites of his Church, and in 1589 became domestic chaplain to Ann Howard, whose husband, the first earl of Arundel , was in prison convicted of treason. It was to him that Southwell addressed his
