  • ASIN: Customer Reviews: A Great Teaching Text This is a cookbook-like approach to the teaching of poetic form. Each chapter presents a different form, a step-by-step guide to implementing a lesson with students (which is clear enough, I've found, to leave for a substitute lesson plan!), and selected examples of successful types. A great work for junior and senior high school general-level classes. Great book - Fresh and Unusual This book is a wonderful mix of fresh and unusual activities and guiding interludes by the authors. The book is not only a great way to get you creative juices lowing, but it is an inspiring read. Many of my students enjoy the interludes between activities as much as the activities themselves.

    Stafford, William
Down In My Heart Though he would author over 50 volumes of poetry, William Stafford¢s first book of poems, West Of Your City , was not published until 1960 when the poet was 46 years-old. A prolific writer, Stafford maintained a steady habit of writing before dawn each morning. In 1963, he was awarded the National Book Award for his second collection, Traveling Through The Dark. His other honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Shelley Memorial Award, the Melville Cane Award, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Western States Lifetime Achievement Award. Among his best-known collections are The Rescued Year Stories That Could Be True New and Collected Poems Writing the Australian Crawl Views on the Writer's Vocation (1978), and An Oregon Message (1987). He went on to serve as the Poetry Consultant for the Library of Congress in 1970¢a position known today as Poet Laureate¢and was appointed as Oregon¢s Poet Laureate in 1975. Perhaps a vestige of his peripatetic past, he traveled a great deal in his later years, giving readings and encouraging young writers throughout the United States, Germany, Poland, Egypt, India, Pakistan, and many other nations. Considered a poet of everyday life, Stafford¢s work manages to be expertly crafted (often featuring full and slant rhymes) without being overtly complex. It is also a feature in many of his poems to share a haunting sense that some things cannot be changed or understood. He never sought, as other poets, to arrive at any clear assertions or conclusions in his poetry; rather, as he once remarked, ¢A writer is not trying for a product, but accepting sequential signals toward an always-arriving present.¢? A poet to the very end, William Stafford died in his home in Lake Oswego, Oregon on August 28, 1993 having written, as was his custom, a poem early that morning. In ¢Are You Mr. William Stafford?¢? the poet seems to offer a fitting coda to his life¢s work:

During the Second World War, Stafford was a conscientious objector and worked in the civilian public service camps-an experience he recorded in the prose memoir Down My Heart (1947). He married Dorothy Hope Frantz in 1944; they had four children. In 1948 Stafford moved to Oregon to teach at Lewis and Clark College. Though he traveled and read his work widely, he taught at Lewis and Clark until his retirement in 1980. His first major collection of poems, Traveling Through the Dark , was published when Stafford was forty-eight. It won the National Book Award in 1963. He went on to publish more than sixty-five volumes of poetry and prose. Among his many honors and awards were a Shelley Memorial Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Western States Lifetime Achievement Award in Poetry. In 1970, he was the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position currently known as the Poet Laureate).
