Our new 27-foot racing sloop has been developed from our years of experience with high performance light displacement racing sailboats. Several of the leaders in the field have had particular influence on our new superboat, includingVan de Stadt's Black Soo Starbuck, George Olson's Grendel, Steve Fennell's (Pi), and Bill Lee's Magic, Witchcraft, Chutzpah and Panache.
Our 27 will be an all-around performer. She will have the exceptional off-the-wind performance characteristic of all the light boats, and in addition will have both strong heavy air upwind capability and very good light air performance.
The most important design features that make this possible are light displacement and long waterline, combined with an optimum hull shape for the correct balance between stability and wetted surface. The hull shape also has the optimum rocker for high speed surfing in big waves, and a very substantial spade rudder for good directional control in all conditions. The sail area is carefully calculated with respect to both stability and wetted surface to insure excellent performance in all wind conditions.
The general layout has taken into account years of past history of ocean racing. The cockpit design was chosen after a careful analysis of existing and potential space arrangements to provide the maximum comfort and efficiency. The layout is arranged to integrate the traveller, winches, tiller, and lines from the mast and winches into a practical and workable unit. The winch islands which also form the seat back rests are carefully designed for both sitting comfort and optimum functioning. They are large for sitting and for the best arrangement and use of hardware. Cockpit drainage is through l 1/2-inch drains out the transom, and the drain outlets are oversize to double as foot steps for climbing aboard from swimming or man overboard.

January 2002. WALKER FAMILY / GEORGE STARBUCK PHOTO INDEX Joseph reynier was born in the Southern Alps of France on March 30,1849. He spent a pleasant young life with his eight brothers and one sister. The family had a farm where they raised cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. During the time he was growing up in the Champsaur Valley there was a great deal of civil unrest and crop failures. Like many young men before them, he and his brother Mattieu heard talk of new opportunities in America and were directed on a course of new adventure. They set sail from La Havre in1864 along with Mattieu's wife Marie. Soon after arriving in New York and hearing all the talk of California they booked passages around the cape to San Francisco. They remained in San Francisco for several years and, after purchasing a herd of sheep, supplies and a wagon in 1867 they headed out taking a route across the state, over the Sierras at Donner Pass. Dropping into the Carson Valley, they continued into Bishop where they spent time letting the sheep graze. Southern California was their ultimate destination, but all during the trip they were looking for other favorable places to settle. The trip was slow and arduous, taking one year to drive the sheep into Los Angeles. Matthieu had decided to stay in the now growing community of Los Angeles, After hearing of available land for homesteading in the Placerita Canyon area, Joseph set out through the San Fernando Valley and up over the old Spanish trail to the mouth of the Placeritos. He passed many active placer mining operations being fed by water from the hand-dug flume that can still be seen in upper Placerita Canyon.

    Subject: Re: George Starbuck
George Starbuck died Thursday morning at his home in Tuscaloosa at age 65 after a twenty year bout with Parkinson's disease. A fine poet and generous person, George directed the graduate writing programs in creative writing at Iowa (where, ages ago, he hired Kathleen Fraser) and at Boston University. While at SUNY Buffalo in 1963, he initiated a successful challenge of New York's Feinberg loyalty-oath law. After a semester as writer-in-residence, George decided to live in Tuscaloosa. For the past several years, he has been a kind friend, much valued for his learning, his conversation, and his advocacy of a wide range of poetries. Hank Lazer Date: 17 Aug 96

Subject: George Starbuck Emerging from my lair here, to salute the memory of George Starbuck, first met in Buffalo thirty years ago, during my first summer there in the company of G.S., Ann London, Robert Creeley , John Logan, John Wieners, Robert Hogg, Basil Bunting , George Bowering, Jack Clarke, Al Glover, Duncan McNaughton...a summer that definitely changed my life, as did George's subsequent invitation to come and teach at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, whose director he then was. Cet ouvroir was a very different place during his tenure than what it had been before, and, I believe, what it has been since. Not only did he invite Kathleen Fraser and her then husband Jack Marshall, he also invited Ted Berrigan, Steve Katz, Seymour Krim, David Rayall, at that time, regarded as pretty 'cutting edge' makaris, somewhat threatening, even, to the post-Paul Engle neo-Frostian/pseudo-WCWilliamsian 'Iowa' establishment.

    George Starbuck
George Starbuck (1931-1996) was an American poet of the neo-formalist school. His work is marked by clever rhymes, witty asides, and the fusing of Romantic themes with cynicism towards modern life. Starbuck called his style of formalism SLABS, for Standard Length And Breadth Sonnets. He was not widely appreciated by mainstream culture during his lifetime, but in the few years since his death his work has earned favor from both literary critics and casual readers of poetry. Two new collections of his poems have been published in the last few years (Poems Selected from Five Decades and Visible Ink) and have helped win him a wider audience. Starbuck's best-known poems include "Tuolomne," "On an Urban Battlefield," and "Sonnet With a Different Letter At the End of Every Line." He fathered five: Margret, Stephen, John, Anthony and Joshua. He taught at the Iowa Writers Workshop and, later, at Boston University.

SERIES III MANUSCRIPTS DATES 5.5' (7 boxes, 1 oversize) This series contains poetry manuscripts, many of which were enclosed with the letters in the Correspondence series. They were removed and placed in this series, since other such enclosures were already separated from the covering letters. The series is divided into two subseries: "Manuscripts & Proofs of Books Published by Pym-Randall Press," and "Miscellaneous Manuscripts.'' A folder titled, "Pym-Randall Inventory," precedes the two subseries. It contains a copy of the typescript inventory of the archive done by James Randall when he was preparing to transfer the records to the University of Rhode Island. The "Inventory" contains valuable notes on the Press's publishing history. The "Manuscripts & Proofs of Books Published by Pym-Randall Press'' subsection contains all manuscripts, designs, and proofs for Pym-Randall publications. There are no manuscript materials for some books. It is arranged chronologically by year, and alphabetically by author and title within each year. Manuscripts, designs, and proofs are filed in separate folders for each book.
