John Steinbeck was born in Salinas , California on February 27, 1902, of German an Irish ancestry and died on December 20, 1968, in New York City and is buried in Salinas in the Hamilton family plot his mothers family. He is California's most famous novelist and has been called Monterey County's favorite son and he put Monterey county on the map and gave in its surname "Steinbeck Country". In October of 1944 John and Gwyn Conger Steinbeck purchased the Soto adobe in Monterey but by spring of 1945 he realized that he and Monterey had changed too much and his dream of living in Monterey was not to be. Steinbeck wrote many books based on his early experience growing up in the Salinas Valley , California.

He attended Stanford University intermittently between 1920 and 1926. Steinbeck did not graduate from Stanford, but instead chose to support himself through manual labor while writing. His experiences among the working classes in California lent authenticity to his depiction of the lives of the workers, who remain the central characters of his most important novels. Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in 1962; his most noted works include "The Grapes of Wrath" in 1939 and "The Moon is Down" in 1942. He said he could not remember a time when he did not write, but he was 14 when he formalized his ambition. He was a dreamer as a kid, not an active participant. He loved horses and played polo at Stanford, where the only courses he took were those that held his interest. After six years, he left without graduating and took the same approach to jobs, staying only as long as they intrigued him. After he published his first book and married Carol Henning, he settled in Pacific Grove on the California coastal county. He moved to New York City in 1925, where he worked briefly as a bricklayer and reporter. Two years later, he returned to California and began his career as a novelist. By the late 1930s, Steinbeck earned both critical recognition and popular success for his populist novels, including Tortilla Flat In Dubious Battle (1936) and Of Mice and Men (1937). His writing used naturalistic language and displayed a powerful social conscience, bringing to life the everyday struggles of the poor in Depression-era America. His most famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), followed a displaced Oklahoma farm family which travels to California in desperate search for work. During World War II, Steinbeck worked as a war correspondent in Italy and Northern Africa for the New York Herald Tribune .
