The Grapes of Wrath (1940) is director John Ford's most famous black and white epic drama - the classic adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1940 Pulitzer Prize-winning, widely-read 1939 novel. [The sentimental film is much more closely related to Ford's social protest dramas, The Informer (1935) and How Green Was My Valley (1941) than to his magisterial Westerns.] This film was the most popular left-leaning, socialistic-themed film of pre-World War II Hollywood.

American writer John Steinbeck, American author and winner of the Nobel Prize in 1962, was a leading writer of novels about the working class and was a major spokesman for the victims of the Great Depression (a downturn in the American system of producing, distributing, and using goods and services in the 1930s, and during which time millions of people lost their jobs).
Early life
a collection of the legends of King Arthur. Steinbeck decided while in high school that he wanted to be a writer. He also enjoyed playing sports and worked during the summer on various ranches. Steinbeck worked as a laboratory assistant and farm laborer to support himself through six years of study at Stanford University, where he took only those courses that interested him without seeking a degree. In 1925 he traveled to New York (by way of the Panama Canal) on a freighter (boat that carries inventory). After arriving in New York, he worked as a reporter and as part of a construction crew building Madison Square Garden. During this time he was also collecting impressions for his first novel. Cup of Gold (1929) was an unsuccessful attempt at romance involving the pirate Henry Morgan.

Fine in fine and bright dustwrapper with one short tear on the front panel. A lovely copy of this poignant, classic novella of two Depression-era drifters whose dreams of a better life are not supported by fate. By way of illustration of this volume's scarcity, 2500 copies of the first issue were printed vs. 50,000 for the Grapes of Wrath , and 78,000 for Cannery Row . Basis for the 1939 Lewis Milestone film with Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr. in the lead, and which lost out to Gone With the Wind for the Best Picture Oscar in possibly Hollywood's greatest year (other "losers" that year included The Grapes of Wrath, Dark Victory, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Wizard of Oz, Ninotchka, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington , and Wuthering Heights ). A pretty copy. [BTC #291769] More Results Explore BTC highlights along with additional titles in stock related to the item above... STEINBECK, John

Kind of story

Short story/novel Explain the title
The title is linked to a Robert Burns poem, 'to a mouse'. In this poem a mouse has built a nest in which it can survive the winter. But the farmer destroys it. The same is the case with Lennie's plans for his future. The story is also about a relationship between a man and animals and between two very different men. Background Information
Titles of some other works by the same author: Cup of Gold, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden. Summary
The simple minded Lennie, together with his protecting friend George travels from ranch to ranch to get work. Lennie is a simple-minded guy, who likes to pet soft things. This gives some problems, because he is very big and strong and when he pets animals like mice an rabbits they die because he breaks there necks: At there last address, in Weed, they just wanted to feel this red dress. The girl didn't like this and she squawked this got Lennie so mixed up that he held on, because he was so scared that this was the only thing he could do. As soon as the girl tells the guys in Weed, they start a party out to lynch Lennie. They go to another ranch; on their way to next ranch they pass by a river where they take a sleep and choose it as a place to hide in case that might be necessary.
