Coffee and oranges in a sunny chair, And the green freedom of a cockatoo Upon a rug mingle to dissipate The holy hush of ancient sacrifice. She dreams a little, and she feels the dark Encroachment of that old catastrophe, As a calm darkens among water-lights.

Paperback
Book Description Wallace Stevens the poet and Wallace Stevens the insurance executive: for more than one critical generation it has seemed as if these two men were unacquaintedthat Stevens was a poet who existed only in the rarefied world of language. However, the idea that Stevens lived a double life, the author maintains, is misleading. This compelling book uncovers what Stevens liked to think of as his "ordinary" life, a life in which the demands of politics, economics, poetry, and everyday distractions coexisted, sometimes peacefully and sometimes not. Examining the full scope of Stevens's career (from the student-poet of the nineteenth century to the award-winning poet of the Cold War years), Longenbach reveals that Stevens was not only aware of events taking place around him, but often inspired by those events. The major... Stevens, Wallace
(b . Oct. 2, 1879, Reading, Pa., U.S.d. Aug. 2, 1955, Hartford, Conn.), U.S. poet whose work explores the interaction of reality and what man can make of reality in his mind. It was not until late in life that Stevens was read at all widely or recognized as a major poet by more than a few. Stevens attended Harvard for three years, worked briefly for the New York Herald Tri bune, and then won a degree (1904) at the New York Law School and practiced law in New York City. His first published poems, aside from college verse, appeared in 1914 in Poetry, and thereafter he was a frequent contributor to the literary magazines. In 1916 he joined an insurance firm in Hartford, Conn., rising in 1934 to vice president, a position he held until his death. Harmonium (1923), his first book, sold fewer than 100 copies but received some favourable critical notices; it was reissued in 1931 and in 1947. In it he introduced the imagination-reality theme that occupied his creative lifetime, making his work so unified that he considered three decades later calling his collected poems "The Whole of Harmonium." He displayed his most dazzling verbal brilliance in his first book; he later tended to relinquish surface lustre for philosophical rigour. In

68. Stevens, The Relations Between Poetry And Painting (abstract)
Brief abstract of Stevens essay The Relations Between Poetry and Painting from his book The Necessary Angel .
http://mh.cla.umn.edu/txtimjj1.html
  • Wallace Stevens. "The Relations Between Poetry and Painting." The Necessary Angel . New York: Random, 1951. 159–76.
S TEVENS ASSERTS that there is a universal poetry, of which literary poetry and painting are manifestations. Art and composition are one; poetry and painting alike create through composition. "Where the poet does his job by virtue of an effort of the mind he is in rapport with the painter, who does his job with respect to the problems of form and color" (000). Comparing the prose of Proust and the paintings of Villon he finds that these works were deliciae of the spirit as distinguished from delectationes of the senses, for one found in them both "the labor of calculation, the appetite for perfection." Stevens speculates that "it may be that we are dealing with something that has no significance, something that is the result of imitation" (000). He quotes De Quincy, distinguishing between the poet and the painter as between two imitators, one moral, the other physical, and he suggests, "There are imitations within imitations and the relations between poetry and painting may present nothing more" (000). However, notes Stevens, in our own time the search for the supreme truth has been a search for some supremely acceptable fiction. Poets and painters alike make that assumption; it brings poetry and painting into relation as sources of our present conception of reality. It reaffirms a philosophical center through which reality may be repossessed and re-created with poetic acts.

It may very well be impossible, as J. Hillis Miller asserts in his Poets of Reality , "to find a single systematic theory of poetry and life in Stevens" (259). Some of the prevailing critical views of Stevens' work characterize him as an "atheist" (Pearce 415) whose work affirms "the firm dignity of the merely natural man" (Bloom 76). David Jarraway, in his Wallace Stevens and the Question of Belief , writes about a Stevens figured as a proto-deconstructionist, insisting on "Steven's insistence on dismantling the logocentric models of belief" (311) in "An Ordinary Evening in New Haven." In opposition to these readings comes a work like Janet McCann's Wallace Stevens Revisited: "The Celestial Possible"

Imagination/Reality: Wallace Stevens' Harmonium and the Visual Arts By the time Wallace Stevens moved to New York City in 1900 he had completed three years as a special student at Harvard, and had published a few poems in the Harvard Monthly and the Advocate (a literary journal at Harvard of which he was president). He continued to pursue a literary life in New York, but after an attempt at journalism and at the urging of his father (L59), he enrolled in New York Law School in the fall of 1901. In 1904 he passed the bar and eventually acquired a position in the insurance field after attempting to hang out his own shingle (Stevens, H., 77-8). He married Elsie Viola Moll (a woman also from Reading) in 1909 and in 1916 they moved to Hartford. Stevens was by this time working for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co., the insurance company he was to stay with for the rest of his career, becoming vice-president in 1934. Before leaving for Hartford, though, he caught the literary bug again (L 187) and by 1914 Stevens was submitting poetry again for publication and communicating with the editor of Poetry , Harriet Monroe (L 192).
