Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, on November 13, 1850. He studied engineering at Edinburgh University, spending his summers in France, but eventually abandoned it in favor of law. However, he never practiced, having decided that he would be a writer. His first published work was an essay called "Roads" and his first books were collections of travel writings, such as An Inland Voyage . He then met his future wife Fanny, an older American woman, and traveled to California, which he described in several autobiographical works. He began writing fiction with short stories, such as A Lodging for the Night and The Pavilion of the Links and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Treasure Island was his first novel, published in 1883, which made him successful. He wrote other novels in the same style, such as Kidnapped and Catriona , as well as historical romances and stories set in the South Seas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
'The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde' is written
by Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson was born in
Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 1850 and died in 1894.
He grew up in a wealthy, middle-class Scottish family.
His father and uncles were designers and builders of
lighthouses and the Stevensons were well-known figures
in the fashionable bourgeois circles of the time.
Although as a young man he rebelled against his strict
father as well as against the hypocrisy of the Edinburgh bourgeois mentality, the Calvinist sense of sin and the stern belief that evil lurks everywhere and cannot be conquered, influenced Stevenson's life. As a child Stevenson suffered from tuberculosis. In order to relieve Stevenson's sickbed his father often told him exiting stories about long journeys and dangerous adventures. After a good deal of unnoticed short stories, 'Treasure Island' was published in

CRITICISM IS LOVE
From an Aesthetic Realism Seminar
By Barbara Allen of There Are Wives
Includes Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson
(Fanny Van de Grift Osborne)
Introduction In the late 1800s, these words appeared in a short novel, published in England, and deeply affected people all over the world: I resolved in my future conduct to redeem the past; and I can say with honesty that my resolve was fruitful of some good. You know yourself how earnestly in the last months...I laboured to relieve suffering; you know that much was done for others,...but I was still cursed with my duality of purpose and as the first edge of my penitence wore off, the lower side of me, so long indulged, so recently chained down, began to growl for license. These sentences by Robert Louis Stevenson from his powerful story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are about the two opposites which Aesthetic Realism says are in all people, including wivesgood and evil, respect and contempt. The man who wrote these words was keenly aware of the struggle between these two mighty forces: his "duality of purpose," what was good and "the lower side" of human beings. And, I believe, his marriage with Fanny Van de Grift Osborne is important in the history of marriage, because criticism was such an essential part of their care for each other. Tonight I will be talking about this aspect of their marriage, in relation to what I learned from Eli Siegel and Aesthetic Realism classes and lessons, and about what women are learning in

The Black Arrow shows RLS researched his subjects
The Black Arrow is my favorite novel of all time, probably because I love medieval stories. I was intrigued to discover that Stevenson has it take place in a real place in southeast England (Suffolk County). The cities around the present day city of Tunstall are similar to the cities and villages of the book: Kettleburgh for the novel's Kettley, Framlingham for the novel's Risingham, and Farnham for the novel's Foxham. I believe that Shoreby is really Orford and Holywood, Leiston. The Battle of Shoreby is modeled after the First Battle of St. Albans (1455) of the Wars of the Roses, and there were noblemen who disguised themselves as monks (the Earl of Wiltshire). I love Stevenson's books!
