Stoker, Bram
Abraham ¢Bram¢? Stoker (1847-1912) was a sickly child, a star university athlete, civil servant, theater manager, and the author of eighteen books, but he is best known to history as the author of the seminal horror novel, Dracula. He was born in Dublin in 1847 and suffered from a number of childhood infirmities. When he recovered, he attended Trinity College and became a notable athlete.
After college, he started a civil service career and served in that capacity for a decade before moving into journalism. His glowing review of Henry Irving¢s performance as Hamlet led to the actor¢s friendship with Stoker who became Irving¢s traveling secretary and ultimately, the conscientious and efficient manager of Irving¢s Lyceum Theatre in London. While in Irving¢s employ, he married actress Florence Balcombe. In London, he began writing novels and short stories. Under the Sunset (1882) was a collection of children¢s stories and his first published novel was

Bram Stoker (1847-1912) , Irish theatre critic and author wrote the Gothic horror novel Dracula "It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway?"Ch. 1 Written in epistolary fashion, Stoker introduces us to the young solicitor Jonathan Harker as he travels to Transylvania to assist Count Dracula in a real estate transaction. While the first chapter starts off pleasantly enough, Harker soon begins to note odd happenings and details of the people and events he experiences while travelling deeper and deeper into the Carpathians. Gloomy castles standing high in the mountains, odd figures half-obscured by the dark, eerie landscapes with flashing lights, and howling wolves trail Harker as he journeys ... unaware of the mystery and horrors he and his love Mina Murray are soon to become entangled with. Only with the help of such noted characters as Professor Van Helsing, John Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris does good prevail over evil. Dracula is often referred to as the definitive vampire novel, but it is possible that Stoker was influenced by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu's (1814-1873) Gothic vampire novella

    Bram Stoker
Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born in Clontarf, Ireland on November 8th, 1847. After spending his early childhood bedridden by an unidentified illness, Stoker developed himself into an athlete in his adolescence, playing soccer and being named University Athlete at Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated with honors in Mathematics. Bram's father, a civil servant himself, secured a place for his son at Dublin Castle. There Bram wrote his first work, Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland: Collected Works of Bram Stoker , but it was not published until 1879, after he was already famous. He began publishing his stories in magazines regularly during his eight-year term at Dublin Castle: The Crystal Cup The Chain of Destiny The Spectre of Doom (1880). He also took unpaid positions as a theatre critic for Dublin's Evening Mail and as editor of The Irish Echo . In 1878 Stoker accepted the job as business manager for Sir Henry Irving's Lyceum Theatre. He left his civil service job, married Florence Balcombe (Stoker competed with Oscar Wilde for Florence's hand), and moved to London.

Unexplained disasters begin to occur in the streets of London before the mystery and the evil doer are finally put to rest. Notice that if there is more than one author, or editor, your search should indicate the FIRST author or editor. The data base is not case-sensitive, but please check your spelling. By "approach" we mean the style of the book (fiction, sociology, history, etc). Note that books on movies are listed under "Literature, Art". Literature claiming that vampire culture is evil and should be avoided would be classified as "Hostile (Counter)" if based on religious reasons and as "Hostile (Anti)" if secular. We suggest to check first the alphabetic list of approach shortcuts . The data base has been computerized by different people with possible different ideas on how to classify books.
