SUMMARY Named one of the Best Books of 1999 by the Los Angeles Times The Pianist is now a major motion picture directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody ( Son of Sam The Pianist
Though he lost his entire family, Szpilman survived in hiding. In the end, his life was saved by a German officer who heard him play the same Chopin Nocturne on a piano found among the rubble. Written immediately after the war and suppressed for decades, The Pianist is a stunning testament to human endurance and the redemptive power of fellow feeling.

On the 23rd September 1939, the last live broadcast on Polish radio came from a young pianist named Wladyslaw Szpilman. German shelling put a stop to the transmission. The Pianist is Szpilman's best-selling account of his war years, his survival against all odds. Whilst his family was deported to Treblinka and exterminated, Szpilman escaped, thanks to a music loving policeman who recognised him. This was only the first in a series of lucky escapes that littered his life as he hid among the rubble and corpses of the Warsaw Ghetto. The most remarkable was the rescue that came at the hands of a German officer, Wilm Hosenfeld, who brought food to Szpilman's derelict hideout. Hosenfeld died in a Stalingrad labour camp but portions of his diary survived, telling of his outrage at the madness and evil he witnessed.

    Music and the Holocaust
Towards the end of World War II, in a burnt-out villa in the destroyed city of Warsaw, the Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman faced a German officer before an out-of-tune piano. Szpilman had not bathed in months, and had been living off scraps for more than a year. Szpilman prepared himself for a blow or a shot. Instead, the officer asked about his profession. Although the question seemed meaningless given the context, Szpilman replied: “pianist”. The German took him to the battered piano and told him to play, no simple task for a starved man who had not touched a piano for three years. Despite his weakness, Szpilman played Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor, the same piece that he had played on the radio the day the Germans invaded Warsaw. After a moment of silence, the officer asked him if he was Jewish, then gave him food and clothing with which to survive the next weeks. When the officer was about to leave, Szpilman took his hand and said: I never told you my name; you didn’t ask me, but I want you to remember it. Who knows what may happen? You have a long way to go, to get home. If I survive, I’ll certainly be working for Polish radio again. If anything happens to you, if I can help you then in any way, remember my name, Szpilman, Polish radio.

Wladyslaw Szpilman (1911-2000) [pronounced Vuadysuav Shpilman ; also addressed as Wladek ( Vuadek ) Szpilman] was born in Sosnowiec, in Poland. As a young boy, he studied piano with Josef Smidowicz and Alexander Michalowski, themselves students of Franz Liszt. In 1931, he left for Berlin and continued his studies at the Academy of Music, under the direction of Leonid Kreutzer; and the Academy of Arts, under Arthur Schnabel and Franz Schreker. During these years, he composed a Concerto for Violin'; his Suite for piano Zycle maszyn' ( Life of Machines ); numerous pieces for piano and orchestra; film scores; and popular songs that brought him celebrity in his homeland. At the age of 27, Szpilman had established himself as one of Poland's foremost composers and concert pianists when Poland was attacked. In 1935, Szpilman was hired at the Polish state radio station of Warsaw. He was performing live on the airwaves, playing Chopin's Nocturne in C# [C sharp] Minor,' when the Luftwaffe dive-bombed the station on September 23rd, 1939. As Jews, Szpilman and his family (parents, brother Henryk, and sisters Halina and Regina) were soon evicted from their apartment and herded, with several hundred thousand others, into the Warsaw Ghetto. There, Szpilman scraped by, playing piano in the bars where black marketeers and collaborators gathered.
