She is known throughout the world thanks to translations published in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, Swedish, Bulgarian, Albanian and Chinese. Szymborska writes reluctantly; she is believed to have written no more than 250 poems. Perhaps this accounts for the fact that almost every poem is a masterpiece. At least since the mid-1950s, Szymborska has held a place among the very finest Polish and European poets.

Nobel Lecture
The Poet and the World

by Wislawa Szymborska
Polish Poet/Nobel Literature Prize 1996 December 10, 1996 at the Stockholm Concert Hall, Stockholm, Sweden
They say the first sentence in any speech is always the hardest. Well, that one's behind me, anyway. But I have a feeling that the sentences to come - the third, the sixth, the tenth, and so on, up to the final line - will be just as hard, since I'm supposed to talk about poetry. I've said very little on the subject, next to nothing, in fact. And whenever I have said anything, I've always had the sneaking suspicion that I'm not very good at it. This is why my lecture will be rather short. All imperfection is easier to tolerate if served up in small doses. But there are no professors of poetry. This would mean, after all, that poetry is an occupation requiring specialized study, regular examinations, theoretical articles with bibliographies and footnotes attached, and finally, ceremoniously conferred diplomas. And this would mean, in turn, that it's not enough to cover pages with even the most exquisite poems in order to become a poet. The crucial element is some slip of paper bearing an official stamp. Let us recall that the pride of Russian poetry, the future Nobel Laureate Joseph Brodsky was once sentenced to internal exile precisely on such grounds. They called him "a parasite," because he lacked official certification granting him the right to be a poet ... Several years ago, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Brodsky in person. And I noticed that, of all the poets I've known, he was the only one who enjoyed calling himself a poet. He pronounced the word without inhibitions. Just the opposite - he spoke it with defiant freedom. It seems to me that this must have been because he recalled the brutal humiliations he had experienced in his youth.

Wislawa Szymborskas Gedichte in "Der Augenblick"

Wikimedia Commons has media related to: Wisława Szymborska Wisława Szymborska (born July 2, 1923, in Prowent, now part of Kórnik Poland ) is a Polish poet essayist and translator. She was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature . In Poland, her books reach sales rivaling prominent prose authors citation needed — although she once remarked in a poem entitled "Some like poetry" [ Niektórzy lubią poezję ] that no more than two out of a thousand people care for the art. Szymborska frequently employs literary devices such as irony paradox contradiction , and understatement , to illuminate philosophical themes and obsessions. Szymborska's compact poems often conjure large existential puzzles, touching on issues of ethical import, and reflecting on the condition of people both as individuals and as members of human society. Szymborska's style is succinct and marked by introspection and wit. Szymborska's reputation rests on a relatively small body of work: she has not published more than 250 poems to date. She is often described as modest to the point of shyness
