Donna Tartt
[Login to edit this page] The daughter of Don and Taylor Tartt, she was born in Greenwood, Mississippi and raised in the nearby town of Grenada. At age five, she wrote her first poem, and she was first published in a Mississippi literary review when she was 13. Enrolling in the University of Mississippi in 1981, she pledged to the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her writing caught the attention of Willie Morris while she was a freshman. Following a recommendation from Morris, Barry Hannah, then an Ole Miss Writer-in-Residence, admitted Tartt into his graduate short story course. Following the suggestion of Morris and others, she transferred to Bennington College in 1982, meeting then-students Bret Easton Ellis and Jill Eisenstadt. Tartt began writing her first novel, originally titled "The God of Illusions" and later published as The Secret History, during her second year at Bennington. She graduated from Bennington in 1986. After Ellis recommended her work to literary agent Amanda Urban, The Secret History was published in 1992, overwhelming the 75,000 copies in the first printing to become a bestseller. It was later translated into 24 languages. The Secret History is set at a fictional college that closely resembles Tartt's alma mater. The plot concerns a close-knit group of six students and their professor of classics. The students embark upon a secretive plan to stage a bacchanal. The first-person narrative is flavored heavily by the differences within the group. These include: social class, privilege, intellect and sexual orientation. The narrator reflects on a variety of circumstances that lead ultimately to a murder within the group.

Tartt's much bruited first novel is a huge (592 pages) rambling story that is sometimes ponderous, sometimes highly entertaining. Part psychological thriller, part chronicle of debauched, wasted youth, it suffers from a basically improbable plot, a fault Tartt often redeems through the bravado of her execution. Narrator Richard Papen comes from a lower-class family and a loveless California home to the "hermetic, overheated atmosphere" of Vermont's Hampden College. Almost too easily, he is accepted into a clique of five socially sophisticated students who study Classics with an idiosyncratic, morally fraudulent professor. Despite their demanding curriculum (they quote Greek classics to each other at every opportunity) the friends spend most of their time drinking and taking pills. Finally they reveal to Richard... The Little Friend
Donna Tartt Oct 2003 Paperback From Publishers Weekly Widely anticipated over the decade since her debut in The Secret History, Tartt's second novel confirms her talent as a superb storyteller, sophisticated observer of human nature and keen appraiser of ethics and morality. If the theme of The Secret History was intellectual arrogance, here it is dangerous innocence. The death of nine-year-old Robin Cleve Dufresnes, found hanging from a tree in his own backyard in Alexandria, Miss., has never been solved. The crime destroyed his family: it turned his mother into a lethargic recluse; his father left town; and the surviving siblings, Allison and Harriet, are now, 12 years later-it is the early '70s-largely being raised by their black maid and a matriarchy of female relatives headed by their domineering grandmother and her three sisters. Although every character is...

Book Report
I’ve chosen this passage, because it is making clear, what the book is about. Five Greek-students are obsessed with the Greek habits. They’re all very close with each other and have an intense relationship. In the time of the Greek, people were trying to get in a high and narrowed consciousness, via an old ritual. Four students, without Bunny and Richard (Bunny wasn’t serious enough and Richard wasn’t a part of the group yet), get in this high consciousness. This is a very magical moment, the writer is making this clear, with a good use of words.
The story is very good, but also complicated. It’s sometimes hard to understand, because of the Greek or Latin sentences. The book was nice to read, but it was too thick. It takes a century to finish the book. But I kept on reading, because I wanted to know the whole story.
The passages I liked the most, were the passages in the hotel room. Henry is killing himself. He can’t handle with his life anymore. And the passage which I’ve chosen. I’ve already explained why. When Henry is killing himself, all his friends are seeing it. Camilla, his girlfriend, is very shocked. I liked her the most. Because she was the only girl. That’s not the only reason, she is the most sensitive and nicest one of them all. The person I totally disliked was Henry....
