Tawada Yoko To Be UK Writer-In-Residence Contact: Ralph Derickson Tawada Yoko LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 1, 2004) Tawada Yoko, a writer who has produced more than 20 volumes of literature in both Japanese and German, will be a writer-in-residence at the University of Kentucky during March. Her UK visit is being sponsored by the UK Max Kade House Cultural Center , the UK Japan Studies Program , and UK Asia Center Joseph-Beth Booksellers . The first is set for 7 p.m. March 3 at the Lexington Joseph-Beth and the second is at 7 p.m. March 22 at the Joseph-Beth in Cincinnati, Ohio. She will give a public reading of her works at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in downtown Lexington beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.

Elle étudie la littérature allemande et s’installe à Hambourg en 1982. Au départ, elle travaille pour une entreprise spécialisée dans l’exportation de livres allemands dont son père, qui tient une librairie étrangère à Tokyo, est le premier client, puis elle décide de vivre de sa plume. Aujourd’hui, elle vit à Berlin depuis 2006. Ecrivain à l’identité double, elle écrit indifféremment dans sa langue natale et sa langue d’adoption. Elle explique ses choix de la manière suivante : « Lorsque j’étais enfant, j’ai su très vite que j’écrirais, j’écris depuis l’âge de douze ans. J’ai su très tôt que le japonais n’était pas une langue suffisante pour écrire : au Japon, tout est japonais, mais en dehors du Japon, rien n’est japonais, il me fallait une autre langue. Le russe était la plus belle des langues pour écrire, ensuite venait le français, et l’allemand à cause de Kafka […] A l’époque, les Russes n’acceptaient pas d’étudiants japonais, j’ai dû renoncer à la Russie. J’aimais le français mais mes professeurs n’étaient pas assez indulgents, ils ne me pardonnaient pas mes erreurs, ce sont pourtant les erreurs qui produisent la littérature. Va pour l’allemand. »

An exemplary student at her high school in Ho Chi Minh City, she is selected to attend an International Youth Conference in what is then still East Berlin. Shortly after she arrives a well-meaning (or opportunistic) West German spirits her off to Bochum in West Germany without her knowledge, and after a while there she hops a train hoping to get to Moscow and home but finds herself in Paris instead, where she is taken in by a series of well-meaning folk. Oddly unambitious about resolving her situation, or doing much of anything with her life she spends much of her time at the movies, the cinema a place of escape for her. She becomes obsessed with the films of Catherine Deneuve, and the novel itself is structured around Deneuve's films: each chapter takes its title from one of her films, and the chapters themselves are then also colored by the film in question.

It hums day and night but says nothing. Another box is called washing machine and often goes round the bend. Nevertheless, the language coming out of the television is much crazier. abgrundig Even a self-critical German intellectual who constantly criticized his own country would be insulted if you said to him that German cars were very poor quality. It is easier to insult the Japanese. not only are they proud of Japanese cars, they are proud of the Walkman or even the Japanese washing machine sometimes. Even I, who have no desire at all to be nationalistic, and have no idea about housework, am insulted if someone criticizes Japanese washing machines. I prefer the washing machines made by the German company Bosch because they have a trust fund that among other things, subsidizes contemporary literature. Even so there is no washing machine that can remove the greasy stain left triggered by the idea of nation. In Germany people are proud of German cars although a majority of Germans cannot afford either a BMW or a Mercedes. A little national flag is affordable to everyone, however. One can even buy one in a five and dime store. There are unemployed youths for whom the old form of nationalism can be better symbolized by more obvious symbols than the pride that the upper classes find in luxurious German brands which are too expensive for everyone to buy. These youths realize that they are excluded from the wealth that is organized and can only be reached on a national level.
