The Poems of Edward Taylor
Edward Taylor (1642-1729) was a New England Puritan. He was born in Leicestershire and became a school teacher with Puritan sympathies. After the Great Ejection, Taylor left England, studied divinity at Harvard, and eventually became minister of Westfield, Massachusetts. Taylor was a colleague of Increase Mather and Charles Chauncey, and corresponded with Richard Baxter and other divines in England. He carried on a long-running controversy with Solomon Stoddard over the Lord's Supper, Taylor taking the position later held by Edwards. Donald Stanford says, "Taylor seems to have been endowed with most of those qualities usually connoted by the word puritan . He was learned, grave, severe, stubborn, and stiff-necked. He was very, very pious. But his piety was sincere. It was fed by a long continuous spiritual experience arising, so he felt, from a mystical communion with Christ. The reality and depth of this experience is amply witnessed by his poetry." A perusal of his poetry shows that Taylor was a thorough going Calvinist.

Taylor, Edward
(b . 1645?, in or near Coventry, Warwickshire, Eng.d. June 24, 1729, Westfield, Mass.), one of the foremost poets in colonial British North America. Unwilling to subscribe to the required oath of conformity because of his staunch adherence to Congregational principles, Taylor gave up schoolteaching in England, emigrated to New England, and was immediately admitted as a sophomore by the president of Harvard College, Increase Mather. After his graduation in 1671, he became minister in the frontier village of Westfield, Mass., where he remained until his death. Small in stature, he was remembered by his contemporaries for his intensity of nature and his personal charm. He married twice and became the father of 13 children, most of whom he outlived. Taylor's 400-page quarto manuscript, Poetical Works , was not published by his heirs at Taylor's request. It came into the possession of Yale in 1883 by the gift of a descendant, and the best of his verse was published in 1939. The important poems fall into two broad divisions. "God's Determinations Touching His Elect" is an extended verse sequence thematically setting forth the grace and majesty of God as a drama of sin and redemption. The "Sacramental Meditations," about 200 in number, were described by Taylor as "Preparatory Meditations Before My Approach to the Lord's Supper."

The son of a non-Conformist yeoman farmer, Taylor was born in 1642 at Sketchley Leicestershire , England. Following restoration of the monarchy and the Act of Uniformity under Charles II, which cost Taylor his teaching position, he emigrated in 1688 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America. He chronicled his Atlantic crossing and early years in America (from April 26, 1668, to July 5, 1671) in his now-published Diary. He was admitted to Harvard College as a second year student soon after arriving in America and upon graduation in 1671 became pastor and physician at Westfield, on the remote western frontier of Massachusetts, where he remained until his death on June 29, 1729. He was twice married, first to Elizabeth Fitch, by whom he had eight children, five of whom died in childhood, and at her death to Ruth Wyllys, who bore six more children. Taylor's poems, in leather bindings of his own manufacture, survived him, but he had left instructions that his heirs should "never publish any of his writings," and the poems remained all but forgotten for more than 200 years.

    Edward Taylor
    c. 1642 - 1729
Edward Taylor's tombstone, Westfield, MA. Born in the son of a farmer in England around 1642, the poet crossed the Atlantic in 1668 and was admitted with advanced standing to Harvard College, graduating in 1671. Taylor roomed with Samuel Sewall, the judge who later presided at the Salem witch trials. While in Cambridge, Taylor wrote two elegies and delivered a verse declamation upon graduation.
Taylor was urged by Increase Mather to accept an invitation to minister on the frontier in the wilderness town of Westfield, Massachusetts. The night before he was to set on the desperate winter journey by foot, he went to take his leave of President Charles Chauncy. Edward Taylor’s diary reports: “His love was so much expressed that I could scarce leave him, and well it may be so for he told me in plain words that he knew not how to part with me.” After acute indecision, Edward Taylor left with Thomas Dewey, the Westfield church’s representative, for the frontier. They departed on November 27, 1671, after snowfall, as described in Taylor’s diary: “The snow being above mid-leg deep, the way unbeaten, or the track filled up again, and over rocks and mountains about 100 miles.” Before the year was out, President Charles Chauncy died.
