Mildred D. Taylor The telling of family stories was a regular feature of Taylor family gatherings. Family storytellers told about the struggles relatives and friends faced in a racist culture, stories that revealed triumph, pride, and tragedy. The stories inspired Taylor, and she still has a vivid recollection of the storytelling sessions: The Friendship The Horn Book Magazine , March 1989, 179-80) From these stories, Taylor learned about her great-grandfather, the son of a white plantation owner in Alabama and a slave woman. In the late 1800s, this young man ran away from Alabama to buy land and settle in Mississippi; the land he purchased more than 100 years ago is still owned by the Taylor family.

Mildred Taylor lived in Jackson as a child only a short time, then moved to Toledo, Ohio , where she spent most of her childhood. Study Guides and Essays by Mildred Taylor Let the Circle be Unbroken Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Mildred Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi on September 13, 1943, to Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. She later said she "was born in a segregated city in a segregated state in a segregated America." The Taylors had lived in Missisissippi since the time of slavery. However, only three weeks after their daughter's birth, the Taylor family moved to Toledo, Ohio. Mildred Taylor remained there until graduating from the University of Toledo in 1965. Several outbreaks of racially-motivated violence had occurred in the Jackson area around September 1943, and Taylor's father decided to seek a new life for his family in the North. He chose Toledo because he already had a large network of friends and relatives there. Even after their move, the Taylor family took long car trips to the South, and Mildred's experience of this environment provided the settings for her future novels. In the South that the Taylors visited, segregation was a tangible reality. However, for Taylor, the South of racism and segregation was also a "South of family and community." Familial strength is an important theme in Taylor's books, and stories about her family (aunts, uncles, and great-grandparents), as told by her father, were a staple of Taylor's childhood. Taylor calls these stories "a different history from the one I learned in school" and credits her father's storytelling with her decision to become a writer.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, at a time when African Americans were fighting overseas for liberties they did not possess at home, Mildred Delois Taylor and her family fled the South when she was scarcely three months old to prevent a violent confrontation between a white man and her father, Wilbert Lee Taylor. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel of realistic fiction that concerns itself with issues of prejudice, courage, and self-respect. The story occurs in a small town in Mississippi in 1933, during the height of the Depression. The author allows the reader to experience the racial issues of the time through the eyes of an initially naive Cassie Logan. The racial tension and types of events experienced by young Cassie, her family, and town members cause her to grown up and discover the reality of her environment. This is a powerful book that should be read by all people. Mildred Taylor vividly portrays the racial and economic climate during this period in American history. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry can easily be used in conjunction with social studies lessons on the Great Depression , segregation, the sharecropping system, slavery, and Reconstruction. It should be used in units based on family values, prejudice, courage, self-respect, growing up. The possibilities for this superb novel are only limited by the imagination of the educator.
