Der Inhalt Der Markt der Eitelkeit (Vanity Fair), der erste große Roman Thackerays, will in "natürlicher Weise" geschrieben sein, und dies ist dem Verfasser auch gelungen. Es ist ein ganz realistischer Roman, ein Roman, in dem kein Charakter idealisiert ist. In den beiden weilbichen Hauptgestelten haben wir zwei sehr verschiedene Charaktere vor uns: Amelia Sedley ist beschränkt, Rebecca (Becky) Sharp verschlagen. Amelia hält ihren Bräutigam, den Leutnant George Osborne, für den trefflichsten Menschen, und doch ist er ganz grundsatzlos und mehrmals dicht daran, mit seiner Verlobten zu brechen: nur sein Freund Dobbin, ein ehrlicher, treuer Mensch, hält ihn, obgleich er selbst Amelia im tiefsten Herzen liebt, davon ab. George verheiratet sich mit Amelia, nach kurzer Ehe aber fällt er in der Schlacht bei Waterloo. Erst nach fünfzehn Jahren, die sich ganz der Erinnerung an George und der Erziehung ihres Söhnchens gewidmet hat, heiratet Amelia den Freund ihres Mannes, den auch Indien zurückgekehrten Oberst Dobbin.
