Book Description Customer Reviews: Dylan Thomas Collection Excellent cd series. Thomas' pipe-organ voice resonates on every track. His wit and humor pushes the envelope for its time. Bobby socksers, the hang-over of those early Cold War years, post war America full of booms and busts and Levit-towns. Picture too a staid America, the 1950s campus life just before "the Cool" hit, before the Folk revival scene, pre Beats. Now enter the mop-headed Welsh bard replete with his double entendre openings to audiences. Audiences who are mostly undergrads and academics. Thomas has them laughing in all the right places ... its poetry without a laugh track or safety net. The readings are good, the explantions sometimes meandering but always enjoyable and highly listenable.

    Thomas, Dylan
Dylan Thomas was born on October 27, 1914 in Swansea, Wales. His father was a schoolmaster and Thomas grew up in a middle class enviroment. Thomas was not much of a student but he did edit the Swansea Grammar School Magazine. Thomas¢s interest in literature was fostered by his father¢s extensive library. Between the age of sixteen and nineteen Thomas kept a series of notebooks in which he wrote poetry, and were the basis for many of the poems in his first two published volumes. In 1931, Thomas worked as a reporter for South Wales Evening Post, however he often was factually incorrect and did not appear for all of his assignments. In 1933, Poet Victor Neubury discovered and promoted Thomas¢s poems. Neubury, who was editor of Poets Corner in the Sunday Referee, published seven of Thomas¢s poems between 1933 and 1935. Thomas won a Poets Corner Prize and his first volume, 18 Poems was published in December 1834. That same year Thomas initiated his lifelong habit of traveling between London and a rural retreat, usually Wales. In his time in the country Thomas focused on his writing, in London he developed a reputation as a poet, story-teller and heavy drinker. His second volume

Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914, in South Wales at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in Swansea. His father was an English Literature professor at the local grammar school and would often recite Shakespeare to Thomas before he could read. He loved the sounds of nursery rhymes, foreshadowing his love for the rhythmic ballads of Hopkins Yeats , and Poe . Although both of his parents spoke fluent Welsh, Thomas and his older sister never learned the language, and Thomas wrote exclusively in English. Thomas was a neurotic, sickly child who shied away from school and preferred reading on his own. He read all of D. H. Lawrence 's poetry, impressed by vivid descriptions of the natural world. Fascinated by language, he excelled in English and reading but neglected other subjects. He dropped out of school at sixteen to become a junior reporter for the South Wales Daily Post By December of 1932, he left his job at the

    Dylan Thomas
We present the poetry of Dylan Thomas, read by the author. Thomas often wrote for the sound of words as much as for their meaning, and hearing his rich voice and dramatic style lends a new sense to his verse. The New York Times called Thomas "both a maker and speaker of poetry," and this reading demonstrates the poet's unique manipulation of language and metaphor. Thomas was known for his stormy private life and alcoholism, and died in 1953 at the age of 39.

Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914. The name Dylan comes from the Mabinogion , a collection of 11 mediaeval Welsh tales. The word means "sea". In the tale Math, the son of Mathonwy, challenges Aranrhod, his niece who claims to be a virgin, to step over his magic wand. "Aranrhod stepped over the wand, and with that step she dropped a sturdy boy with thick yellow hair; the boy gave a loud cry, and with that cry she made her way for the door..... "Well," said Math, "I will arrange for the baptism of this one......and I will call him Dylan." The boy was baptized, whereupon he immediately made for the sea, and when he came to the sea he took on its nature and swam as well as the best fish. He was called Dylan (sea) son of Ton (wave), for no wave ever broke beneath him." Marlais is the name of a stream which runs from the hills near the birthplace of Dylan Thomas' great uncle Gwilym Marles Thomas. Marles is a variation of the name Marlais. Dylan Thomas' sister Nancy also bore a variation of the name Marles.

other. A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London Never until the mankind making Bird beast and flower Fathering and all humbling darkness Tells with silence the last light breaking And the still hour Is come of the sea tumbling in harness And I must enter again the round Zion of the water bead And the synagogue of the ear of corn Shall I let pray the shadow of a sound Or sow my salt seed In the least valley of sackcloth to mourn The majesty and burning of the child's death. I shall not murder The mankind of her going with a grave truth Nor blaspheme down the stations of the breath With any further Elegy of innocence and youth. Deep with the first dead lies London's daughter, Robed in the long friends, The grains beyond age, the dark veins of her mother, Secret by the unmourning water Of the riding Thames. After the first death, there is no

    Plain text of the poem.
    http://www.naic.edu/~gibson/poems/dthomas2.html
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

In My Craft or Sullen Art
In my craft or sullen art Exercised in the still night When only the moon rages And the lovers lie abed With all their griefs in their arms, I labor by singing light Not for ambition or bread Or the strut and trade of charms On the ivory stages But for the common wages Of their most secret heart. Not for the proud man apart From the raging moon I write On these spindrift pages Nor for the towering dead With their nightingales and psalms But for the lovers, their arms Round the griefs of the ages, Who pay no praise or wages Nor heed my craft or art.
