Biography
Welsh writer of poetry, short story, movie scenarios and radio scripts, immensely talented. A popular writer, his poetry and verse contains some of the most stirring and passionate words of contemporary literature. He and his wife were known for their drinking and brawling. Toward the end, his drinking went totally out of control. Attractive, even lovable when sober, he became crude and unmanageable when drunk, using offensive language and making lewd advances toward strange women. A poetry reading at City College two days after Thomas's 39th birthday was his final public appearance. He developed delirium tremens and a doctor was summoned to his hotel. The doctor gave the raving man a morphine injection and he went into a coma. He was admitted to the hospital on 11/05 at 1:58 AM. His wife, Caitlin, flew over in time to see him alive but "possessed of 10,000 raving demons." He died on 11/09/1953, about 1:00 PM while being bathed by a nurse, New York, NY. The autopsy cited bronchial-pneumonia, with fluid on the brain as the primary cause and aided by a fatty liver. His death struck many of his readers as a literary tragedy.

22. Sometimes The Sky's Too Bright By Dylan Thomas
Includes a paraphrase interpretation by Leon Malinofsky.
http://plexipages.com/reflections/sky2bri.html
SOMETIMES THE SKY'S TOO BRIGHT
by Dylan Thomas
Sometimes the sky's too bright,
Or has too many clouds or birds,
And far away's too sharp a sun
To nourish thinking of him.
Why is my hand too blunt
To cut in front of me
My horrid images for me,
Of over-fruitful smiles,
The weightless touching of the lip
I wish to know I cannot lift, but can, The creature with the angel's face Who tells me hurt, And sees my body go Down into misery? No stopping. Put the smile Where tears have come to dry. The angel's hurt is left; His telling burns. Sometimes a woman's heart has salt, Or too much blood; I tear her breast, And see the blood is mine, Flowing from her, but mine, And then I think Perhaps the sky's too bright; And watch my hand, But do not follow it, And feel the pain it gives, But do not ache.
SOMETIMES THE SKY'S TOO BRIGHT Paraphrased by Leon Malinofsky
Sometimes life seems too intense or precise Or has too much a profusion of images and things; And the faraway sun's too exacting To justify trying to express them. Why is my art too crude To better sculpt before me My horrid, usual works

25. The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower By Dylan Thomas
Poem with paraphrased version.
http://plexipages.com/reflections/theforce.html
THE FORCE THAT THROUGH THE GREEN FUSE DRIVES THE FLOWER
by Dylan Thomas
The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever. The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks. The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind Hauls my shroud sail. And I am dumb to tell the hanging man How of my clay is made the hangman's lime. The lips of time leech to the fountain head; Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood Shall calm her sores. And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind How time has ticked a heaven round the stars. And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

A LETTER TO MY AUNT DISCUSSING THE CORRECT APPROACH TO MODERN POETRY
by Dylan Thomas
To you, my aunt, who would explore
The literary Chankley Bore,
The paths are hard, for you are not
A literary Hottentot
But just a kind and cultured dame
Who knows not Eliot (to her shame).
Fie on you, aunt, that you should see
No genius in David G.,
No elemental form and sound
In T.S.E. and Ezra Pound. Fie on you, aunt! I'll show you how To elevate your middle brow, And how to scale and see the sights From modernist Parnassian heights. First buy a hat, no Paris model But one the Swiss wear when they yodel, A bowler thing with one or two Feathers to conceal the view; And then in sandals walk the street (All modern painters use their feet For painting, on their canvas strips, Their wives or mothers, minus hips). Perhaps it would be best if you Created something very new, A dirty novel done in Erse Or written backwards in Welsh verse, Or paintings on the backs of vests, Or Sanskrit psalms on lepers' chests.

The Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait
by Dylan Thomas
The bows glided down, and the coast
Blackened with birds took a last look
At his thrashing hair and whale-blue eye;
The trodden town rang its cobbles for luck. Then good-bye to the fishermanned
Boat with its anchor free and fast
As a bird hooking over the sea,
High and dry by the top of the mast, Whispered the affectionate sand
And the bulwarks of the dazzled quay.
For my sake sail, and never look back,
Said the looking land. Sails drank the wind, and white as milk He sped into the drinking dark; The sun shipwrecked west on a pearl And the moon swam out of its hulk. Funnels and masts went by in a whirl. Good-bye to the man on the sea-legged deck To the gold gut that sings on his reel To the bait that stalked out of the sack, For we saw him throw to the swift flood A girl alive with his hooks through her lips; All the fishes were rayed in blood, Said the dwindling ships. Good-bye to chimneys and funnels, Old wives that spin in the smoke

Thomas, Dylan
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Dye) Next (Dynamite) Dylan Marlais Thomas , (October 27, 1914 – November 9, 1953) was an Anglo-Welsh poet who is widely considered one of the most influential English-language poets of the twentieth-century. Although Thomas wrote during the heyday of Modernism , his poetry was radically different from anything produced by the Modernists. Writing deeply personal works fueled by his own troubled emotional life, Thomas produced verse in a highly idiosyncratic style, choosing words often for sound rather than sense and using innovative meters and rhyme schemes similar to those found in the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins , whom Thomas greatly admired. Along with Yeats , Thomas' sonorous and personal style of poetry tinged with his own knowledge of Welsh language and folklore helped to precipitate the Celtic Revival in British literature. Often considered to be one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century in terms of the sheer beauty of his language, Thomas' influence extends to the present among poets like Seamus Heaney, who attempts to capture the music of ancient poetry in the vocabulary of the present-day.

Life
Dylan Thomas was born in the coastal city of Swansea, Wales. His father David, who was a writer and possessed a degree in English, brought his son up to speak English rather than Thomas's mother's native language, Welsh. His middle name, "Marlais," came from the bardic name of his uncle, the Unitarian minister Gwilym Marles.
