Henry Waldo Thoreau wrote "Walden" between 1845 and 1854. As Thoreau writes, "When I wrote the following pages, or rather the bulk of them, I lived alone, in the woods, a mile from any neighbor, in a house which I had built myself, on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts, and earned my living by the labor of my hands only. I lived there two years and two months."

His Concord neighbor and mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, gave the commencement address for that occasion. For several years he taught school, kept a journal, attempted to sell essays he had written, with little success, and gave occasional lectures. Under the tutelage of Emerson, he started writing nature essays. On July 4, 1845 he moved to a small cabin he had built on the shores of Walden Pond. When he left the cabin in 1847 he had finished the manuscript for A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers and had written a considerable portion of his masterpiece, Walden . Both books were published during his lifetime, but sold few copies. Henry died of tuberculosis in 1862. Collections of essays and articles were published posthumously in two separate books: The Maine Woods (1864) and Cape Cod It is not that we love to be alone, but that we love to soar

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) , American Transcendentalist, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, essayist, and poet wrote Walden; or, Life in the Woods The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. .... A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind.Ch. 1 Writing on such varied topics as Economy, Reading, Winter Animals, and Solitude, Thoreau spent just over two years in a cabin he built on the edge of Walden Pond on the property of Ralph Waldo Emerson . It was a place for him to find solitude while he wrote, but for his ever-questioning mind it was also an experiment in self-reliance and living close to nature. Thoreau did not assert that others should live the same way, for Walden is the definitive text on Thoreau's own philosophy of life, what he believed in and

of this 1854 portrait of Thoreau
    (by Samuel Worcester Rowse)
    Biography
Henry David Thoreau was a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, seeing little difference between them. Born in 1817 , one of his first memories was of staying awake at night "looking through the stars to see if I could see God behind them." One might say he never stopped looking into nature for ultimate Truth. Henry grew up very close to his older brother John, who taught school to help pay for Henry's tuition at Harvard. While there, Henry read a small book by his Concord neighbor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature , and in a sense he never finished exploring its ideas although always definitely on his own terms, just as he explored everything! He and his brother taught school for a while but in 1842, John cut himself while shaving and died of lockjaw in his brother's arms, an untimely death which traumatized the 25 year old Henry. He worked for several years as a surveyor and making pencils with his father, but at the age of 28 in 1845, wanting to write his first book, he went to Walden pond and built his cabin on land owned by Emerson

    Henry David Thoreau: Appreciation
    An Essay
    by
    Ralph Waldo Emerson
He was a born protestant. He declined to give up his large ambition of knowledge and action for any narrow craft or profession, aiming at a much more comprehensive calling, the art of living well. He chose to be rich by making his wants few, and supplying them himself. There was somewhat military in his nature, not to be subdued, always manly and able, but rarely tender, as if he did not feel himself except in opposition. He wanted a fallacy to expose, a blunder to pillory, I may say required a little sense of victory, a roll of the drum, to call his powers into full exercise. In 1847, not approving some uses to which the public expenditure was applied, he refused to pay his town tax, and was put in jail. A friend paid the tax for him, and he was released. The like annoyance was threatened the next year. But as his friends paid the tax, notwithstanding his protest, I believe he ceased to resist. No truer American existed than Thoreau. His preference of his country and condition was genuine, and his aversion from English and European manners and tastes almost reached contempt. He listened impatiently to news or

    Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, which was center of his life, although he spent several years of his childhood in the neighboring towns. Thoreau studied at Concord Academy (1828-33), and at Harvard University, graduating in 1837. He was teacher in Canton, Massachusetts (1835-36) and at Center School (1837), resigning after two weeks. In 1835 he contracted tuberculosis and suffered from recurring bouts of it throughout his life. From 1837 until 1838 Thoreau worked in his father's pencil factory, and again in 1844 and 1849 through 1850. With his brother John, Henry opened a school in Concord and taught there in 1838 until 1841, when his brother became fatally ill. From 1848 he was a regular lecturer at Concord Lyceum. He also worked as a land surveyor. A decisive turning point in Thoreau's life came when he met Ralph Waldo Emerson in Concord. He was a member of Emerson household from 1841 through 1843, earning his living as a handyman. In 1843 he was a tutor to William Emerson's sons in Staten Island, New York, and from 1847 until 1848 he again lived in Emerson's house.

Walden During his life, Thoreau was little known outside his small social and intellectual circle. Yet his reputation as a prophet for ecological thought and the value of wilderness, born at Walden, now grows with each passing year. He articulated the idea that humans are part of nature and that we function best, as individuals and societies, when we are conscious of that fact.
