My World - And Welcome to It
James Grover Thurber (December 8, 1894–November 2, 1961) was a U.S. humorist and cartoonist . He had begun his career as a journalist , but made his mark with prose writing. Hailed as the greatest contributor to American humor writing since Mark Twain , Thurber wrote hundreds of essays, and short stories, that often featured gender battles between dominant women and little men as in his The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Catbird Seat. He was best known for his contributions (both cartoons and short stories) to The New Yorker magazine, for which he was also a staff member from 1927-1936. He chronicled his years with The New Yorker in an amusing nonfiction study of the magazine entitled The Years With Ross Thurber was considered a moral satirist who was able to put a new and humorous twist on fables , and all varieties of human behavior. He once said, "If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain

"Possibly the shortest and most elegant autobiography ever written . . . .The Brevity Thurber achieved in My Life and Hard Times by stopping at 1918 seems almost incoceivable today when the most typical biography feels more like a bludgeon than a book" This text refers to the Paperback edition.
Newsweek
"The late James Thurber from Columbus, Ohio, in the course of his work as a an ironic and comic genius, was a rare thing as can be found in the United Statesa stark American without a trace of corn, and a first-class sensibility without a tinge of the precious. He died within twelve months of Hemingway and Faulkner, and Thurber himself is a already a figure, at once looming and modest, in the national pantheon." This text refers to the... Thurber Carnival
James Thurber
October 1999 Paperback Book Review After the chuckles and amidst the chortles, the first-time reader of The Thurber Carnival is bound to utter a discreetly voiced "Huh?" Like Cracker Jacks, there are surprises inside James Thurber's delicious 1945 smorgasbord of essays, stories, and sketches. This festival is, surprises and all, a collection of earlier collections (mostly), including, among others, gems from My Worldand Welcome to It, Let Your Mind Alone!, and The Middle Aged Man on the Flying Trapeze. Needless to say, there are also numerous cartoons that, by themselves, are worth the price of admission. While redoubling Thurber's deserved reputation as a laugh-out-loud humorist and teller-of-gentle-tales, it reintroduces him as a thinker-of-thoughts. To wit: his 1933 "Preface to a Life," in which he observes himself while discussing "writers of light...

James Grover Thurber was born in 1894 in Columbus, Ohio. He began his career as a reporter for the Columbus Evening Dispatch. He became known for his work on The New Yorker, where he was a writer and a cartonist. His most famous story is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty".

As a child, he was hit in the eye with an arrow. He lost his sight in that eye, and was troubled by vision problems for years, which kept him out of the military. He was totally blind for the last 26 years of his life, but was able to continue writing by dictating to a secretary. Thurber's memory was so strong he could compose a 2,000-word story in his mind, remember it overnight, and dictate it to his secretary the next day.
In 1960, received a Special Tony Award, along with 'Burgess Meredith' (qv), for "A Thurber Carnival."
