Leo Tolstoy
Leo Tolstoy was born at Yasnaya Polyana, in Russia's Tula Province, the fourth of five children. The title of Count had been conferred on his ancestor in the early 18th century by Peter the Great. His parents died when he was a child, and he was brought up by relatives. In 1844 Tolstoy started his studies of law and oriental languages at Kazan University, but he never took a degree. Dissatisfied with the standard of education, he returned back to Yasnaya Polyana in the middle of his studies, and then spent much of his time in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 1847 Tolstoy was treated for venereal disease. After contracting heavy gambling debts, Tolstoy accompanied his elder brother to the Caucasus in 1851, and joined an artillery regiment. In the 1850s Tolstoy also began his literary career, publishing the autobiographical trilogy Childhood Boyhood (1854), and

Leo Tolstoy
Count Leo Tolstoy was baptized Orthodox into a life of privilege and wealth in Czarist Russia in 1828. His young adulthood is best summed up with his own words from his book Confession I cannot recall those years without horror, loathing, and heart-rending pain. I killed people in war, challenged men to duels with the purpose of killing them, and lost at cards; I squandered the fruits of the peasants' toil and then had them executed; I was a fornicator and a cheat. Lying, stealing, promiscuity of every kind, drunkenness, violence, murder - there was not a crime I did not commit...Thus I lived for ten years." Later in life, Tolstoy formulated a unique Christian philosophy which espoused non-resistance to evil as the proper response to aggression, and which put great emphasis on fair treatment of the poor and working class. Tolstoy also gave a strong plea for Christians to reject the State when seeking answers to questions of morality and instead to look within themselves and to God for their answers. Tolstoy's books Confession What Then Must We Do?

Biography of Leo Tolstoy
Leo Tolstoy - Russian novelist
Lev Nikolaevich (Leo) Tolstoy (1828–1910). Russian novelist, reformer, and moral thinker Tolstoy was born at Yasnaya Polyana, the Tolstoy family estate a hundred miles south of Moscow, on August 28. He died on November 20 at a nearby railroad station, having fled in the night from an increasingly contentious marriage and a set of familial relationships that had been hardened in large part by Tolstoy's attempts to apply his radical moral beliefs to his own life. In the intervening eighty-two years Tolstoy became perhaps the most prominent novelist in an age and place of great authors as well as a vociferous critic of science and modernization. Tolstoy's international fame rests primarily on two novels, War and Peace (1865–1869) and Anna Karenina (1875–1877). His fictional works also include short masterpieces such as "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" (1886), "The Kreutzer Sonata" (1889), and "Master and Man" (1895). In addition he wrote autobiographical accounts of his childhood ( Childhood, Boyhood, Youth

He began his literary career in the 1850s, publishing a trilogy about his own life: Childhood Detstvo Boyhood Otrochestvo , 1854) and Youth Yunost' , 1857). Tolstoy served in the Russian army during the Crimean War, and his book Sevastopol Sketches Sevastopol'skie Rasskazy , 1855-56) was well-received in literary circles and praised for its realistic depiction of war. After travelling throughout Europe, Tolstoy returned to the family estate and devoted himself to raising a family and writing his great psychological novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina . Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace, Russian Literature
Full list of novels including Anna Karenina, plus famous quotes and life biography. Get the full background of Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina Pevear and Volokhonsky, have produced the first new translation of Leo Tolstoy's classic Anna Karenina in 40 years. In the introduction, Pevear gives the reader a history of the work Tolstoy called his first true novel. Pevear explains how Tolstoy took real events, incorporated them into his novel, and went through several versions before this tale of the married Anna and her love for Count Vronsky emerged in its final form in 1876. The translation is easily readable and succeeds in bringing Tolstoy's masterpiece to life once again. War and Peace
    (Classic Paperback) War and Peace
focuses on Napoleons invasion of Russia in 1812. As Napoleons army invades Russia, Tolstoy follows characters from diverse backgrounds - peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers. The novel details their struggles with the problems of their time period, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specific roles, becoming some of the most moving and uniquely human characters in Russian literature.

I sit on a man's back, choking him, and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by any means possible, except getting off his back. The changed form and substance of law is rather like what a jailer might do who shifted a prisoner's chains...or removed them and substituted bolts and bars. "A Russian should rejoice if Poland, the Baltic Provinces, Finland, Armenia, should be separated, freed from Russia; so with an Englishman in regard to Ireland, India and other possessions; and each should help to do this, because the greater the state, the more wrong and cruel is its patriotism, and the greater is the sum of suffering upon which its power is founded. Therefore, if we really wish to be what we profess to be, we must not only cease our present desire for the growth of the state, but we must desire its decrease, its weakening, and help this forward with all our might." Leo Tolstoy, from "Writings on Civil Disobedience and Nonviolence," written in 1886.
