  • ASIN: Customer Reviews: Some unforgettable imagery There were a few poems that didn't seem to fully blossom but the vast majority are exciting, some shockingly good. Some of the absolute best poetry I've read in years. Expressionism Straight Fans of German Expressionism owe a debt of gratitude to Simko for this book. Trying to find a book from this era can be extremely difficult. Other famous authors of the period (Gottfried Benn, Georg Heym) are almost impossible to find. The book presents both the original German text, and a very good English translation. Trakl's poetry is bittersweet, the meter almost hynoptic. The reader confronts a collage of colors and emotions in a Trakl poem. Trakl died young, a victim of WWI. No bullet killed him, but rather he killed himself while working at a military hospital. Although his poems reveal his grief, and his despair, the reader finds himself somehow empowered by them. Out of his suffering came some of the most beautiful poems in the German language.

He took to drugs and eventually became an addict; he was particularly attached to his similarly addicted pianist sister, who died in 1917. Trakl qualified in 1910, served a year as a volunteer (see Einjähriger ) in the army medical service, but experienced considerable difficulty in finding an appointment. He was greatly helped by friends, especially L. von Ficker (1880-1967), who also published his early poems in his periodical Der Brenner Trakl's first volume of verse was Gedichte Sebastian im Traum (1915) was published posthumously. His poetry is at all times rich, heavily loaded with imagery of autumn and its associated colours, but is devoid of any affectation, such as commonly accompanies the fin de siècle mood. Trakl was acutely conscious that his world, both personal and external, was breaking apart (‘entzweibricht’ is his own word), and this gave rise to a state of suffering (Leid), which is the keynote of his poetry. Deep anxiety about his sister and about his own subsistence (drugs and drink made him dependent on the help of friends), then the outbreak of war, his call-up as a reserve officer in the medical services, and the primitive and inadequate conditions in which he had to tend excessive numbers of men wounded in the battle of Grodek in Galicia, all overtaxed his resources, and he was sent to hospital at Cracow, where he died of an overdose of cocaine. Whether he intended his death is uncertain. Trakl's poetry developed in his last year or two from the strophic form of the early poems to a hymnic mode, which, while owing something to

    Georg Trakl
Georg Trakl (1887-1914), the Austrian Expressionist poet, served with the Austrian army during the first three months of the war before committing suicide on 3/4 November 1914. Born to a middle class Protestant family in Salzburg on 3 February 1887, Trakl's mother was unhappy throughout his childhood and considered emotionally unstable. In turn, as Trakl progressed through his own childhood he began himself to withdraw from friends and family and similarly demonstrated early signs of emotional instability. Taking to opium, chloroform and alcohol Trakl failed his school courses and was obliged to re-take a year. Meanwhile he developed a close attachment to his sister Grete, leading some critics to speculate upon a possibly incestuous relationship. Trakl's initial attempts at poetry were uniformly unsuccessful; at this time he also wrote brief articles for a local newspaper and two one-act plays (both also unsuccessful).

Austrian lyric poet whose work centered on death, disaster and decay. His work as an expressionist poet had a formative influence on his period. In 1905 Trakl left high school and began apprenticeship with a chemist. He studied pharmaceuticals in Vienna, entering the university in September 1908. In 1910 he was conscripted into the Austrian Army Medical Corps for a year. He worked as a pharmacist but was drinking excessively and could never keep a job.
