An Interview with John Tranter John Tranter is an Australian poet and editor of Jacket an online literary magazine interviewed by Tom Coverdale page 1 , overland express: Do you think the popularity of poetry is in decline? John Tranter: I really don't know. There seem to be a lot of people out there writing poetry. In Australia, in New York, in London and San Francisco, there are plenty of poetry readings going on. I remember back in the late 1980s I looked though a copy of Poetry Flash , a free monthly newspaper of poetry events in San Francisco. There were about two hundred poetry reading events on each month in that town. Mind you, the audiences were very small, and the people performing came from groups that were very splintered - one small audience for each group: like war veterans of color with physical disabilities one night, retired Jewish high-school teachers who performed rap poetry the next, and so on. I went to one reading, and there were four people in the audience, including me. I felt terrible when I left - I was reducing the audience by twenty-five per cent. The Internet, with its easy access to email, makes it easy for like-minded groups to get together and talk about their interests, and I guess this helps cement and develop an interest in poetry. The Internet is a great aid to communication. It has revived the art of letter-writing.

McMichael Summary Candidate superantigens were screened for their ability to induce lysis of human histocompati- bility leukocyte antigen class II-positive targets by human CD8 + influenza-specific cytotoxic T cell (CTL) lines. Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (CPET) induced major histocompatibility complex unrestricted killing by some but not all CTL lines. Using "anchored" polymerase chain reactions, CPET was shown to selectively stimulate peripheral blood lymphocytes bearing T cell receptor V~ 6.9 and V~22 in five healthy donors. V324, V/~21, V318, V/~5, and VB6.1-5 appeared to be weakly stimulated. Antigen processing was not required for CPET to induce proliferation. Like the staphylococcal enterotoxins, CPET is a major cause of food poisoning. These data suggest that superantigenic and enterotoxigenic properties may be closely linked.

John Kinsella interviews JOHN TRANTER John Kinsella: Could you talk about your early years. John Tranter: I was born in 1943 in Cooma, a little town in the south-eastern mountains of Australia. My father taught in a one-teacher school in the nearby village of Bredbo. It's high country around there, long rolling grassy hills, and pretty much unpopulated. I remember my mother saying that a hot wind blew all summer long, full of dust; in the winter a bitter cold wind, and sometimes snow. We moved to the coastal town of Moruya when I was about four; the climate there was more Californian. I fell out of the car on the drive to Moruya, late at night. It's almost my earliest memory. On a bend in the dirt road the passenger-side door came open by accident - the car was an old Chevrolet sedan. I'd been asleep in my mother's arms. I fell onto the road and bounced through the blackberries into a ditch. I can still remember staggering to my feet, covered with blood from the gash in my head, and seeing the tail-light disappearing around a bend. It took them a moment or two to realise what had happened, and stop the car. For those few endless seconds it felt very lonely there in the dark.

Martin in Greece, 1974 New Poetry magazine, are very much a part of the ferment of that period. Martin also worked as a cadet reporter, a freelancer book reviewer and a subeditor and subtitler of television programs for SBS. He travelled to Europe many times, returning to Greece to live for some years, and exploring France, Italy and Germany as well as the British Isles. He had a strong sense of political engagement as well as an appetite for esoteric philosophies and complex cultural detail, and all this material helped to form his thinking and his practice as a writer, though he was not a remote intellectual in any sense. He enjoyed literary conversation, but he was just as happy talking with old fishermen in a Greek village taverna. When Martin died in June 1990 at the age of forty-two we suffered a real loss: his writing had grown and matured, and in the last decade his best poems had developed a haunting intensity. What he left unwritten is sad to contemplate. What he bequeathed us, though, is as much as many writers achieve in a lifetime: a generous and varied body of writing that speaks in a distinctive voice, and articulates a dedication to the creative life. With its deeply-felt doubts, its joy in learning, and its relish in the exercise of an ancient craft, it is a project worthy of a scholar-poet of the Renaissance.
