ENCYLOPEDIA OF SOVIET WRITERS
Tsvetaeva, Marina Ivanovna. Born 8 October 1892 in Moscow into a comfortable life. Her father was a professor of art history at the University of Moscow, and her mother a pianist. Marina had a half-sister and half-brother from her father's first marriage, and a full sister, Anastasia. When Marina was four years old, her mother noted the child's ability to rhyme words and suggested that she might become a poet. As a child, Tsvetaeva's family traveled extensively abroad, and she attended schools in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. She was an indifferent student in mathematics and science, but excelled in history, literature, and languages. At age 16, she began studies at the Sorbonne in Paris.
Her first collection of poetry, "Evening Album", dealing with themes of her childhood and youth, appeared in 1910. He work attracted the attention of poet and critic Maximillian Voloshin, who befriended her.
She married Sergei Efron in 1912, and they had two daughters, Ariadna (Alya) and Irina. She was ill-disposed to the Russian Revolution of 1917not surprising, perhaps, because her husband served as an officer in the White Army, while she remained in Moscow. Her anti-Bolshevik sentiments are expressed in "The Swans' Camp", a lyrical chronicle of the Civil War as viewed by the wife of a White Army officer. The "Swans" of the title refer to the volunteers in the White Army. She suffered terribly in Moscow under the famine conditions of the Civil War time. Irina died in 1920 of starvation. In 1922 Tsvetaeva emigrated to Berlin and Prauge, settling eventually in Paris in 1925. Her son, Georgi, was born in 1925.

Tsvetaeva, Marina Ivanovna (1892-1941) Widely considered one of the four greatest twentieth-century Russian poets, and an innovative prose writer and dramatist, Marina Tsvetaeva was born in Moscow on October 8, 1892. Her father was an art professor and her mother a gifted pianist of Polish descent, whose father had forbidden her a concert career. Although Tsvetaeva's mother wanted her daughter to become a pianist, Marina herself was drawn to words and began writing poetry at the age of six. Her first volume of poems, Evening Album , was published in 1910 and consisted of verse written between the ages of fifteen and seventeen.

Tsvetaeva, Marina
Russian, 1892–1941
Tsvetaeva’s prose covers nearly the entire span of her creative career. As J.Marin King’s ground-breaking translations (published in A Captive Spirit, 1980) indicate, it can be divided into three periods with some overlap. The first period extends from 1917 to 1921 and contains predominantly diaries and prose sketches culled from her experiences in the Russian Revolutions of 1917 and the Civil War. The second (1922 to 1932) is devoted to essays on poets and writers, the nature of creativity, and the ethics of writing.
The third period extends from 1934 to 1937. During this period myth and memory merged to produce the most memorable of the prose portraits as well as the landmark autobiographical sketches. As King also indicates, the thematic and chronological continuity among the autobiographical sketches suggests that Tsvetaeva viewed them not independently but as chapters of an autobiography.
Undoubtedly the main reason why Tsvetaeva’s prose did not initially receive the recognition it deserved is its extreme difficulty. Hers is a powerful prose that delights in flexing its muscles. In its terseness it resembles a form of personal shorthand. Transitions are replaced by dashes linking unrelated, even antithetical ideas. Paragraphs are reduced to a single sentence, and sentences to a single word. The reduction of the text to its smallest structural unit is a deliberate Tsvetaevan strategy. For her, the word is not an empty signifier but a repository of sound, and sound generates meaning. This is demonstrated by her favorite technique of taking a single word and from it deriving an entire chain of auditory and thematic associations. Unfortunately, these chains of association are often so personal that they leave the uninitiated reader bewildered.

Marina Ivanova Tsvetaeva (1892-1941) - also Marina Cvetaeva, Marina Tsvetayeva One of the most original of the Russian 20th-century poets, whose literary rehabilitation began in the 1960s. Tsvetaeva's disciplined poetry grew from her own contradictory personality and highly controlled use of language. Among her innumerable themes were female sexuality and the tension between women's private emotions and their public roles. She lived in exile in the 1920s and 1930s because of her political views. After returning to the Soviet Union and being ostracized by the literary community she committed suicide in 1941. What shall I do, singer and first-born, in a
world where the deepest black is grey,
and inspiration is kept in a thermos?
with all this immensity
in a measured world?

(from 'The Poet', translated by Elaine Feinstein) Tsvetaeva started to write verse in her early childhood. As a poet she debuted at the age of 18 with the collection Evening Album , a tribute to her childhood. The book was privately published and was dedicated to the narcissist diarist Bashkiartseff (1858-1884). Her writings were also examined by

Selected Poems (Tsvetaeva, Marina) Book Description
Marina Tsvetaeva has contributed to Selected Poems (Tsvetaeva, Marina) as an author. Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva (8 October 1892 - 31 August 1941) was a Russian and Soviet poet and writer born in Moscow. Her work was not looked kindly upon by Stalin and the Bolshevik rA[a?Agime; her literary rehabilitation only began in the 1960s. Tsvetaeva's poetry arose from her own deeply convoluted personality, her eccentricity and tightly disciplined use of language. Among her themes were female sexuality, and the tension in women's private emotions; she bridges the mutually contradictory schools of Acmeism and symbolism.
