Categories: Poets Writers
712 - Tu Fu or Du Fu, born in China. He was a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. Along with Li Bai (Li Po), he is frequently called the greatest of the Chinese poets.
730 - He travelled in the Jiangsu/Zhejiang area; his earliest surviving poem, describing a poetry contest, is thought to date from the end of this period.
744 - He met Li Bai (Li Po) for the first time, and the two poets formed a somewhat one-sided friendship: He was by some years the younger, while Li Bai was already a poetic star.
746 - Moved to the capital in an attempt to resurrect his official career. He participated in a second exam the following year, but all the candidates were failed by the prime minister (apparently in order to prevent the emergence of possible rivals).
754 - He began to have lung problems (probably asthma), the first of a series of ailments which dogged him for the rest of his life.
755 - His life, like the whole country, was devastated by the An Lushan Rebellion, and the last 15 years of his life were a time of almost constant unrest.

Biography
Tu Fu (712-770), was born in China. The actual city where he was born is unknown. We do know, however, that he was born somewhere near the capital city of China, Bejing. There is no record of the names of Tu Fu's parents. Tu Fu was an only child, he had no siblings.
There is no record of Tu Fus parent's jobs, however we know they had an important role in their community, because they were both extremely rich. Tu Fu did not move to any other cities when he was a kid, however when he was a grown up, he spent his times as a poor wanderer, and would travel from city to city. Tu Fu's home, China is known for many things. The Chinese are well known for their advancements in modern mathmatics. China is also home to The Great Wall of China, a halacious monumental barrier which separated and protected the ancient Chinese from the Huns, who were foreing invaders.
Not much is known about the education of Tu Fu, however we know that he was well educated because you can clearly see it in his poems.
In China at the time of Tu Fu, it was considered an honor to serve in his Emperor's military. When his age was ripe, Tu Fu, with ambitions of being a great military leader, enlisted to become a member of the military. Before he could do this, he had to pass the Civil Service Examination. Unfortunately, Tu Fu could not do this, and could no longer be in the military.

Tu Fu:
“Thoughts While Traveling at Night”
(35 Translations)
My Reflection by Night Some scattered grass. A shore breeze blowing light.
A giddy mast. A lonely boat at night.
The wide-flung stars o’erhang all vasty space.
The moonbeams with the Yangtze’s current race.
How by my pen can I to fame attain?
Worn out, from office better to refrain.
Drifting o’er life — and what in sooth am I?
A sea-gull floating twixt the Earth and Sky. Translated by W.J.B. Fletcher (1919)
A Night Abroad
A light wind is rippling at the grassy shore. . . .
Through the night, to my motionless tall mast, The stars lean down from open space, And the moon comes running up the river. . . . If only my art might bring me fame Flitting, flitting, what am I like But a sand-snipe in the wide, wide world! Translated by Witter Bynner (1929) A Traveller at Night Writes His Thoughts Fine grass; slight breeze from bank; High mast; alone at night in boat. Over level widening waste stars droop-flowers;
