  • ASIN: Book Description Turgenev's masterpiece about the conflict between generations is as fresh, outspoken, and exciting today as it was in when it was first published in 1862. The controversial portrait of Bazarov, the energetic, cynical, and self-assured `nihilist' who repudiates the romanticism of his elders, shook Russian society. Indeed the image of humanity liberated by science from age-old conformities and prejudices is one that can threaten establishments of any political or religious persuasion, and is especially potent in the modern era. This new translation, specially commissioned for the World's Classics, is the first to draw on Turgenev's working manuscript, which only came to light in 1988. Customer Reviews: A different Russian classic I'll start out by saying that this was not the version I read. I read a different translation (the Signet Classics version), but as I do not speak Russian and have not read the original, I can't honestly say if the translation made a difference. I'm reviewing the content, and nothing else.

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) Novelist, poet, and playwright, known for his detailed descriptions about the everyday live in Russia in the 19th century. Turgenev portrayed realistically the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. Although Turgenev has been overshadowed by his contemporaries Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy , he remains one of the major figures of the 19th-century Russian literature. "A nihilist is a man who does not bow to any authorities, who does not take any principle on trust, no matter with what respect that principle is surrounded." (from Fathers and Sons Ivan Turgenev was born in Oryol, in the Ukraine region of Russia, into a wealthy family. His childhood was lonely. Especially he was afraid of his strict mother, who beat him constantly . Turgenev studied at St. Petersburg (1834-37), Berlin Universities (1838-41), and completed his master's exam in St Petersburg. At the age of 19 Turgenev, traveled to Germany. He was on a steamer when it caught fire and rumors spread in Russia that he had acted cowardly. This revealing experience, which followed the author throughout his life, formed later the basis for his story A Fire at Sea In 1841 Turgenev started his career at the Russian civil service. For a short time, he worked for the Ministry of Interior (1843-45). After the success of two of his story-poems, Turgenev devoted himself to literature, country pursuits, and travel. The rest of his life, he had a relationship with the opera singer Pauline Garcia Viardot, living near her or at times with her and her husband. In 1845-46 and 1847-50 Turgenev travelled to France with them. Viardot remained Turgenev's great and unfulfilled love; in his youth he had had one or two affairs with servant-girls, and produced an illegitimate daughter, Paulinette.

    Chapter 1
"WELL, PYOTR, STILL NOT IN SIGHT?" WAS THE QUESTION ASKED ON 20th May, 1859, by a gentleman of about forty, wearing a dusty overcoat and checked trousers, who came out hatless into the low porch of the posting station at X. He was speaking to his servant, a chubby young fellow with whitish down growing on his chin and with dim little eyes. The servant, in whom everythingthe turquoise ring in his ear, the hair plastered down with grease and the polite flexibility of his movementsindicated a man of the new improved generation, glanced condescendingly along the road and answered, "No, sir, definitely not in sight." "Not in sight?" repeated his master.

    Biography
Russian author and master of fiction though not acknowledged on a par with Tolstoy; published from 1847. He gained an international reputation within the artistic circles of western Europe, becoming an interpreter of Russian literature and values. Turgenev studied in Russia and Germany where he earned his Masters degree in philosophy. His first play, a comedy, "A Month in the Country," was released in 1850. His fame grew with a series of books attacking serfdom, which led to his confinement to his country estate in Spasskoe. From 1845, he spent most of his time in Germany and France, following his mistress, opera singer Pauline Viardot-Garcia, to whom he remained devoted all his life. He briefly went into political service before inheriting his mother's estate in 1850. Turgenev died 9/03/1883, near Paris.
