Mark Twain - Tom Sawyers Abenteuer
Originaltitel: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
    Roman. Aufbau Taschenbuch Verlag 1876
    267 Seiten, ISBN: 3746660866

    Twain, Mark
Mark Twain traveled, wrote, and laughed. He was at times a journalist, essayist, novelist, businessman, and always, a traveler. As a correspondent for Alta California, he talked his editors into financing a five-month trip to Italy and the Middle East. His correspondence from the trip, compiled as The Innocents Abroad (1869), enjoyed popularity and critical acclaim. Fame from the publication of Innocents brought him into the circle of the Langdon family from New York. Twain fell in love with Olivia Langdon, and their marriage included as dowry a stake in a Buffalo, New York newspaper. They settled in Buffalo, but after the death of Olivia's father, moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where they lived for twenty years. From his experience in the west, Twain produced Roughing It (1871). He toured England and then wrote, with Hartford neighbor Charles Dudley Warner, The Gilded Age (1873), a critique of politicians of the late nineteenth century. His famed novels

Mark Twain, became morose and weary of life. Shortly before his death, he wrote, "A myriad of men are born; they labor and sweat and struggle;...they squabble and scold and fight; they scramble for little mean advantages over each other; age creeps upon them; infirmities follow; ...those they love are taken from them, and the joy of life is turned to aching grief. It (the release) comes at lastthe only unpoisoned gift earth ever had for themand they vanish from a world where they were of no consequence,...a world which will lament them a day and forget them forever." Youth in Hannibal and early travels.
Clemens was the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. He was four when the family moved to nearby Hannibal , on the west bank of the Mississippi, where his father kept a dry-goods and grocery store, practiced law, and entered local politics. There Samuel spent his boyhood, enchanted by the romance of river lifethe steamboats, keelboats, and giant lumber rafts and also the human flotsam washed up by the river: professional gamblers and confidence men, itinerant stevedores and indigent raftsmen. Hannibal was an ideal place for a boy to grow up, with its woods and hills, its opportunities for fishing, and a nearby island in the river. Samuel's father died in 1847, when the boy was 11. From that time on, it became necessary for Samuel to contribute to the family's support. He became a delivery boy, grocery clerk, and blacksmith's helper during summers or after school. At the age of 13 he became a full-time apprentice to a local printer. When his brother

Mark Twain [pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835-1910) , quintessential American humorist, lecturer, essayist, and author wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer “Tom did play hookey, and he had a very good time. He got back home barely in season to help Jim, the small colored boy, saw next-day's wood and split the kindlings before supperat least he was there in time to tell his adventures to Jim while Jim did three-fourths of the work. Tom's younger brother (or rather half-brother) Sid was already through with his part of the work (picking up chips), for he was a quiet boy, and had no adventurous, trouble-some ways.” Ch. 1 Protagonist Tom Sawyer is introduced together with his friends Joe Harper and Huck Finn, young boys growing up in the antebellum South. While the novel was initially met with lukewarm enthusiasm, its characters would soon transcend the bounds of their pages and become internationally beloved characters, inspiring numerous other author’s works and characters and adaptations to the stage, television, and film. The second novel in his Tom Sawyer adventure series, Huckleberry Finn (1885), was met with outright controversy in Twain’s time but is now considered one of the first great American novels. A backdrop of colourful depictions of Southern society and places along the way, Huck Finn, the son of an abusive alcoholic father and Jim, Miss Watson’s slave, decide to flee on a raft down the Mississippi river to the free states. Their river raft journey has become an oft-used metaphor of idealistic freedom from oppression, broken family life, racial discrimination, and social injustice. Ernest Hemingway wrote

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Published in 1889, Connecticut Yankee is one of the world's first stories about time travel. The seed for this novel was probably planted during MT's 1884-1885 reading tour for Huck Finn , when George Washington Cable bought him a copy of Malory's Morte D'Arthur in an upstate New York bookstore. But MT's interest in travel to "old worlds" was a longstanding one, as his first book shows. And his interest in the British past was also a lifelong preoccupation, as can be seen in texts like The Prince and the Pauper , or even the Memory-Builder game he invented and patented to help American children learn the dates of England's various monarchies. As MT's fantastic attempt to locate his time and place in terms of its imagined pasts and its possible futures, Connecticut Yankee is perhaps his most complex book.
