Tyndale, William (circa 1492-1536), English biblical translator, and writer. Born in Gloucestershire, Tyndale received his master's degree from the University of Oxford. He was ordained in 1515 and then went to the University of Cambridge. There he determined to translate the Bible from the Greek into English in order to combat corruption in the English church and extend scriptural knowledge among the common people of England. Receiving no support from the bishop of London, however, he traveled to Germany, where he met Martin Luther, espoused Reformation principles, and, in Cologne, began (1525) the printing of his English version of the New Testament; it was completed in Worms. He published his annotated translation of the Pentateuch in 1530. Tyndale's translations were vigorously opposed by ecclesiastical authorities in England. Nonetheless, his version of the Bible, together with the earlier translations of the English theologian and religious reformer John Wycliffe, formed the foundation of the Authorized (King James) Version of 1611. Tyndale was the author of a number of tracts upholding the English Reformation. He was taken into custody by imperial representatives in Antwerp and, after 16 months of imprisonment, was tried; on October 6, 1536, Tyndale was strangled and burned at the stake. http://www.sounddoctrine.net/

    Name:
    William Tyndale
    William Hutchens Dates:
    Born: c. 1494
    Died: October 6, 1536 (strangled)
    Fled England: 1524
    New Testament Published: 1526
    Arrested: 1535 Biography:
William Tyndale was a religious reformer whose efforts were key in getting the Bible translated into English. When he sought support in London from Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall, he failed to find it and was forced to leave England under a false name in 1524. His first translation of the New Testament was finally published in 1526 and copies were smuggled into England. The reception by religious authorities was hostile; however, while they did not object to an English translation as such, they did object very strenuously to the commentary which Tyndale included with his work. As a result, copies of his work were ceremonially burnt and agents were sent out by Henry VIII to hunt him down and arrest him. Tyndale was right to be afraid of English spies because one, Henry Phillips, betrayed him in the Netherlands and he was arrested while visiting Antwerp in 1535. He was charged with heresy, put on trial, found guilty and condemned to be burned at the stake - although he was strangled first rather than burned alive.

Exhibition Spotlights William Tyndale, English Martyr
By GAIL FINEBERG A small but intriguing exhibition at the Library tells a story of a 16th century scholar, linguist and priest who died a martyr. The story is one of political intrigue and betrayal, the power of the Word to survive book burners and the capacity of the printing press to terrify monarchs and clerics. At the heart of the North Great Hall Gallery exhibition (first floor, Thomas Jefferson Building) are two copies of a pocket-size, 1526 edition of the New Testament, the first to be printed in English not in King Henry VIII's England, but covertly in Germany. Regarded as a threat to the Roman Catholic Church and the throne, William Tyndale's New Testament "The Tyndale Bible" survived the book burners, but he did not. Left, he first page of "The Gospell off Sancte Jhon" from Tyndale's Worms New Testament (1526), with the familiar "In the begynnynge was that worde/and that worde was with god; and god was thatt worde"; center, engraving of St. Matthew from the "Cologne Fragment," the only known fragment of the uncompleted edition of William Tyndale's translation of the New Testament published in Cologne, 1525.; right, title page of the first edition of "The Authorized Version" (or King James Bible) of 1611. When the British crown finally allowed a translation of the Bible into English, it drew heavily on Tyndale's earlier translation. The Kings James Bible has had an enormous influence on English literature and religion since its publication..

He was influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus , who made the Greek New Testament available in Europe, and Martin Luther Tyndale was the first to translate considerable parts of the Bible into English , for a public, lay readership. While a number of partial and complete translations had been made from the seventh century onward, particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale's was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of

, otherwise named Hitchins , one of the first publishers of the Holy Scriptures in English, was born in 1500, about the borders of Wales , in what county is not mentioned. He was brought up from a child in grammar, logic, and philosophy at Oxford , for the most part in St. Mary Magdalen’s hall, where there is still a painting of him, but accounted an indifferent performance. Here he imbibed the doctrine of Luther, and privately taught it to some of the junior fellows of Magdalen college, and to other scholars. His behaviour was such, at the same time, as gained him a high reputation both for morals and learning, so that he was admitted a canon of cardinal Wolsey’s new college, now Christ-church. But as he made his opinions too public to remain here in safety, and, according to Tanner and Wood, was ejected, he retired to Cambridge , where he pursued his studies, and took a degree. After some time he went and lived at Little Sudbury , in Gloucestershire , with sir John Welch, knight, who had a great esteem for him, and appointed him tutor to his children. Here he embraced every opportunity to propagate the new opinions. Besides preaching frequently in and about

    Tyndale, William
    (b. c. 1490-94, Gloucestershire, Eng.d. Oct. 6, 1536, Vilvorde, Flanders, Neth.), English biblical translator, humanist, and Protestant martyr. Tyndale was educated at the University of Oxford and became an instructor at the University of Cambridge, where, in 1521, he fell in with a group of humanist scholars meeting at the White Horse Inn. Tyndale became convinced that the Bible alone should determine the practices and doctrines of the church and that every believer should be able to read the Bible in his own language. After church authorities in England prevented him from translating the Bible there, he went to Germany in 1524, receiving financial support from wealthy London merchants. His New Testament translation was completed in July 1525 and printed at Cologne and, when Catholic authorities suppressed it, at Worms. The first copies reached England in 1526. Tyndale then began work on an Old Testament translation but was captured in Antwerp before it was completed; he was executed at Vilvorde in 1536. At the time of his death, 50,000 copies of his New Testament had been printed, the first vernacular English text of any part of the Bible to be so published. Tyndale's version became the basis for most subsequent English translations, beginning with the
