Page Famous Norwegian Women on Stamps SIGRID UNDSET (1882-1949)
Portrait of the author Sigrid Undset painted in 1911 by her husband Anders Castus Svarstad. She is best known for her historical novel "Kristin Lavransdatter". For this Middle Age trilogy she received the 1928 Nobel Prize in literature. She gave the money from this prize to help families with disabled children. Among many other famous books are "Jenny", "The Master of Hestviken", "The Faithful Wife" and "Madame Dorthea". Many of her novels deal with problems about regret and guilt. She converted to Roman Catholicism although she was first generation of emancipated women. Undset early stood up against the Nazism because of its contempt for weakness and had to live in USA during the German occupation of Norway.

      Finding Faith
      SIGRID UNDSET
Sigrid Undset, who won the Noble prize for literature in 1928, explains freedom and authority as they concern a persons relationship with the Catholic Church. We have a basic mistrust for all authority that is of this world, and at the same time our human nature is subject to an incurable desire for authority.
      Sigrid Undset
When people stubbornly hold on to the hope that it is impossible to find any absolute truth, it is because they fancy that life would lose its excitement, would have no freedom, if there really existed one truth one alone in which all other truths are contained. Most of us have felt at some time that it is insufferable that two plus two always makes four. We have all known the longing for a dream world where two times two is five, or zero, or seven, or whatever we want at the moment. Of course, the freedom of the dream world is quite illusory. In fact, the number of dreams and combinations of dreams is not unlimited. The life of dreams is bound by laws to a higher degree than most people think. But what I dont know cant hurt me. Thats how people think. What glorious freedom, to fly into a world where people decide for themselves the nature and property of things. In the reality into which we are born, the nature and property of things is already given, everything is knit together by laws. For people as they are, there is only one possibility for freedom: they must find their own way through this whole net of causes and connections.

Sigrid Undset
translated from the Norwegian Alfred Knopf 1930 A book review by Danny Yee Perhaps as a result of the austere binding on the library copy, I approached Kristin Lavransdatter , a thousand page historical novel set in 14th century Norway, with some wariness. And it is certainly not light reading, with its share of illness and plague, sudden and unexpected episodes of violence, death, and other human tragedies. Like the Icelandic family sagas which inspired Undset, however, Kristin Lavransdatter offers an ultimately positive view of human existence. Kristin Lavransdatter tells the story of one woman from childhood to death, through betrothal and an illicit affair, marriage and marital discord, and childbirth and motherhood. There is too much in it to grasp in a single reading, let alone summarise in a brief review. Among other things it encompasses the complexities of kinship ties and family relationships, the pitfalls of reputation and status in tightly knit rural communities (and briefly of the high politics of Sweden and Norway), and the variety of religious beliefs and practices. Undset handles the changes in pacing needed in a novel covering half a century, convincingly connecting events and depicting changes over a lifetime. Kristin Lavransdatter March 1999

27. Biography Of Sigrid Undset
Sigrid Undset (18821949) is one of the three Norwegian authors (and so far the most recent one) to have received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Both these novels about the Middle Ages, in particular "Kristin Lavransdatter", became international best-sellers at the time. According to Alfred Nobel's will, the Literature Prize is to be awarded to the author who has written "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency", and so Undset's books fell within this somewhat elastic category. But it was Sigrid Undset's talent as a great story-teller rather than the idealistic tendency which fascinated her readers all over the world. Her books had been translated into the most important foreign languages even before she received the Nobel Prize. After 1928, they were published in virtually every major language. Now, after a lapse of 70 years, her books are still being read worldwide, by new generations of readers. Outside Norway, her reputation has been mostly confined to "Kristin Lavransdatter." Not so in Norway. I noticed this in connection with my biography of Sigrid Undset, published in 1989. I have received letters from women and men, old and young, from every part of Norway, showing that she is being read, by an increasing number of people in this age of television. Undset's books are being read, and not only the novels about the Middle Ages. She wrote 36 books, the mediaeval novels being one part. Another part are her contemporary novels of Kristiania (now Oslo) and Oslo between the turn of the century and the 1930s, the third part being literary essays and historical articles. Her authorship is wide-ranging and of considerable substance. And, quite obviously, a new generation of readers in Norway has discovered this.

    Undset, Sigrid
Undset, Sigrid key Jenny (1911; tr. 1921, new tr. 2001), were frank and realistic works in which she described women's struggles for selfhood in a male-dominated society but nonetheless strongly upheld traditional social structures. Her writing, always powerfully ethical, deepened in religious intensity after her conversion (1924) to Roman Catholicism. Undset is most famous for her historical novels dealing with universal human problems. Kristin Lavransdatter Olav Audunsson The Master of Hestviken, Her later works include tales of contemporary family life, among them Ida Elisabeth (1932, tr. 1933), The Faithful Wife (1936, tr. 1937), and Madame Dorthea (1939, tr. 1940), and the autobiographical The Longest Years (1934, tr. 1935) and Return to the Future (1942). Undset came to the United States after the Nazi invasion of Norway (1940) and made a successful lecture tour of the country before returning home in 1945. She was awarded the 1928 Nobel Prize in Literature. Her work fell into obscurity during the latter half of the 20th cent., but interest in her writing was revived beginning in the 1990s, sparked by the publication of new and improved translations. (b. May 20, 1882, Kalundborg, Den.d. June 10, 1949, Lillehammer, Nor.), Norwegian novelist whose readership is international and who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. Her father was an archaeologist, and her home life was steeped in legend, folklore, and the history of Norway. Both this influence and her own life story are constantly present in her worksfrom Elleve aar Eleven Years ), in which she tells of her childhood, to the story of her flight from Nazi-occupied Norway, published originally in English as Return to the Future (1942; Norwegian Tillbake til fremtiden She worked in the office of an electrical engineering firm for 10 years before she married, bore children, and began to write. Her early novels deal with the woman's position in the contemporary unromantic world of the lower middle class. These include Splinten av troldspeilet Images in a Mirror ) and Jenny (1911). She then turned to the distant past and created what is considered her masterpiece, the trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22). Though the medieval climate of the novel is strikingly evoked, it is still a story of a woman's fate, portraying the proud, independent Kristin's growth, through her marriage to a charming but irresponsible man, into a strong but humble and self-sacrificing woman. Both in this and in the four-volume historical novel
