Remembering Updike: John Cheever
Posted by Lila Byock John Cheever and John Updike enjoyed an occasionally antagonistic relationship over the years—not long after they met, Cheever dreamt that Updike was trying to kill him—but their mutual admiration, bordering on awe, endured for two decades. In 1976, Cheever received a false report that Updike had died and was moved to record the following tribute in his journal So the call about John’s untimely death was a fraud. I have decided, says my daughter, that it was an overambitious stringer, who saw the name on a police blotter and tried to cash in. This is a wish founded on the desirable simplicity of being charitable; one of her best characteristics. I am distempered, forlorn, and idle. Updike outlived his friend by twenty-seven years—long enough to offer his own encomium at Cheever's funeral, and in The New Yorker jQuery("body").addClass("mobile"); CN.site.mobilecompatible=true; CN.site.videoReadToken = "VVIgQcePgLXb617cBHL7WxnGVXBdIk2z4SK4q3TaMqQ."; CN.site.channelplayerId = "9525028001"; Back to Festival Main View the full version at newyorker.com

Audio Interview with John Updike
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, author John Updike talks with Don Swaim about Updike's novels, The Witches of Eastwick and Rabbit Run , in this 1984 interview. Updike’s fascination with witches started when he was a boy. He grew up in "witchy" and superstitious part of Pennsylvania. His grandmother was a Pennsylvania Dutch, and she too was very superstitious. His curiosity peaked during his college years when he had the time to research the subject. From his research, he found no one had ever been proved to be an actual witch. Records only showed those who admitted to it, most likely to end his or her torture, or if they were "crazy." Updike also comments on another one of his novels, The Coup , which is about, and narrated by, the president of a fictional Marxist Islamic central African nation called Kush. Updike was criticized for going on a limb to write about something as foreign to him as Africa, but he defended his decision by saying writers should not be afraid to write about something new. Roman. Rowohlt Verlag 1960
314 Seiten, ISBN: 349915398X

Description
“Drinking a toast to the visible world, his impending disappearance from it be damned.” That’s how John Updike describes an elderly character in his remarkable final collection. He might have been talking about himself. In My Father’s Tears, Updike revisits his people, places, and themes—Americans in suburbs, cities, and small towns grappling with faith and infidelity—in vivid portraits of the aged, people for whom the past has become paramount. My Father’s Tears is a superb set of tales that is a vital and unforgettable farewell.

Updike, John
American, 1932–
Clearly the majority of Updike’s nonfiction has been occasional, prompted by an invitation to contribute to a publication or for a special event. His reviews of contemporary literature run into the hundreds, and he considers the opportunity to produce reviews and essays an important corollary to his work as a novelist and shortstory writer. “One accepts editorial invitations,” he remarks in the preface to Odd Jobs (1991), “in the hopes of learning something, or of extracting from within some unsuspected wisdom. For writing educates the writer as it goes along.” How one uses the education gained through such writing is, Updike admits with wry self-deprecation, another matter: “My purpose in reading has ever secretly been not to come and judge but to come and steal.” Certainly these literary exercises have benefited Updike in his novels, but his erudition shows also in the wide range of tasks he has undertaken with facility.
In his less formal pieces, Updike often strikes the pose of the gentle satirist, poking fun at American life and customs; nor does he exempt himself from criticism. Whether writing about baseball, postal envelopes, or an imaginary visit to the planet Minerva, he is able to capture people, places, and events with a clarity of vision that brings them to life for readers. Even in pieces which seem to have no great moral, political, or sociological import, Updike takes great pains to see that readers share the experience about which he has chosen to write. While there may be no great lessons to impart, readers are nevertheless heartened—even delighted—to have an opportunity to find before them a little bit of the American scene, with all its foibles and idiosyncracies.
