E. van Vogt Biography Alfred Elton van Vogt (April 26, 1912 - January 26, 2000) was a Canadian-born science fiction author. After starting his writing career by writing for "true confessions" style pulp magazines, he decided to switch to writing something that he enjoyed: science fiction. His first published science fiction story, Black Destroyer (Astounding Science Fiction, 1939), depicting a fierce, carnivorous alien stalking the crew of an exploration ship was extremely popular and set the style for a number of science fiction films over the years.
He wrote a large number of short stories, many of which were retrospectively patched together into novels, or "fixups" as he called them. Sometimes this was successful (The War against the Rull); other times the disparate stories thrown together made for an incoherent plot (Quest for the Future).
He had always been interested in the idea of all-encompassing systems of knowledgethe characters in his very first story used a system called "Nexialism" to analyse the alien's behaviourand he became interested in the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski, and wrote three novels on this theme, The World of Null-A and The Pawns of Null-A in the late 1940s, and Null-A Three in the early 1980s. (The term Null-A refers to non-Aristotelian logic).
In the 1950s, he became involved in L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics and his writing more or less stopped for some years. He resumed writing again in the 1960s.

Alfred Elton van Vogt was one of my favorite authors when I was a teenager, and has remained a favorite while most others (Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. Rider Haggard, Mickey Spillane, Ian Fleming) have been forgotten. This web page presents a meager selection of my reviews and thoughts about van Vogt. Van Vogt was born in Canada in 1912 and died 1/26/2000. The first science fiction novel I ever bought, and maybe ever read, was

NEW stuff! October 19th 2009: ORB Books 2008 edition of The Voyage of the Space Beagle available here One of the great original classics of modern SF returns!
An all-time classic space saga, The Voyage of the Space Beagle is one of the pinnacles of Golden Age SF, an influence on generations of stories. An episodic novel filled with surprises and provocative ideas, this is the story of a great exploration ship sent out into the unknown reaches of space on a long mission of discovery. They encounter several terrifying alien species, including the Ix, who lay their eggs in human bodies, which then devour the humans from within when they hatch. This is one of the most entertaining and gripping stories in all of classic SF. August 4th 2008: Slan Hunter by Van Vogt and Kevin J. Anderson to be published in paperback by TOR in December.

Van Vogt was born on a farm in Edenburg, a Russian Mennonite community east of Gretna, Manitoba , Canada. Until he was four years old, van Vogt and his family spoke only a dialect of Dutch in the home. Van Vogt's father, a lawyer, moved his family several times and his son found these moves difficult, remarking in later life:
Childhood was a terrible period for me. I was like a ship without anchor being swept along through darkness in a storm. Again and again I sought shelter, only to be forced out of it by something new.

Alfred Elton van Vogt wurde am 26. April 1912 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kanada geboren.
